1980 In 1980 the Ford Racing design team introduced the SVO M81 McLaren Mustang which had aerodynamic body modifications, custom wheels, custom interior, and racing tuned turbo charged in-line 4-cylinder engine. 7 prototype metal body versions were built and 243 fiberglass versions for $25,000 each.

1987 New to 1987 is the ACS McLaren convertible. Between 1987 and 1990 ASC McLaren took Mustang coupes and converted them into two-seat convertibles. They were created by Peter Muscat and Ford, built by American Sunroof Company (ASC) with performance suspension and wheel parts from McLaren. Other customized items include body panels, custom paint, hood vents, aftermarket wheels, and black ostrich leather seats. 497 were built in 1987. In 1980 McLaren built a series of M81 Mustangs with Ford Racing.

1988 The 1988 ACS McLaren convertible customized from a 2-door coupe (notchback) continued into its second year of production with aerodynamic body panels, custom exterior paint, plain solid grille, wire looking wheels, and custom interior. No back seats in these cars. 1015 were built in 1988.

1989 The 1989 ACS McLaren offered conversions of coupes into into 2-seat convertibles with aerodynamic body panels, custom wheels, custom leather interior, tinted rear lights, and an emblem-less front grille. 247 ASC McLaren Mustang convertibles were built in 1989.

1990 1990 was the last year of the ASC McLaren modified Mustang convertible. ACS McLaren had been modifying Mustang coupes into two-seat convertibles since 1980 and introduced a large quantity of production models starting in 1987. Modifications included manual convertible tops, custom wheels, darkened tail lights, emblem-less front grille, custom leather seats and door trim, and custom dash and center console. 63 standard ACS McLaren convertibles were built, plus two 25th Silver Anniversary Editions (one shown here).
