First Mustang Indy 500 Pace Car!!! 1979 Mustang Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, one of about 11000 replica pace cars built in 1979. All replica cars had a flip-up sunroof instead of a T-top. The replicas had the same striping, pewter/black paint scheme (a special pewter silver paint reserved only for this model), unique hood, three-slat grille, premium Recaro bucket seats, and a choice of turbo-four or regular V-8 engines. The Race-day decals were included for dealers to apply if the customer wished. This replica has a rebuilt 302 V8 engine.

Rebuilt 302 V8 Engine 1979 Mustang Indianapolis 500 Pace Car model showing rebuilt 302 V8. This engine has oversize heads with stainless steel valves, magnum roller rocker arms, competition cam high energy cam, headman headers, C4 transmission, Ford aluminum intake manifold, and Ford 2bbl motorcraft carb.

Radio and status indicator of the 1979 Mustang If the radio had not been replaced, this is one of the options (an AM/FM radio with cassette player from another 1979 Mustang Pace Car) plus the "Safety Convenience Panel" or the "Convenience Control Panel" which had lights showing the status of light bulbs, fuel, etc. Earliest models (1967, 1968, 1969) of this panel had 4 status lights (belts, brake, fuel and door).

Decals for Customer Application This is what the customer supplied Pace Car lettering decals look like.

1979 Mustang Pace Car Actual 1979 Mustang Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. Second Mustang featured as a pace car for the Indianapolis 500, Mustangs where featured as pace cars in 1964, 1979 and 1994. Driven by Jackie Stewart, this car was a colorfully striped hatchback with a special T-bar roof and a V-8 tuned by Jack Roush to attain the Brickyard's required 120-mph minimum track speed. Ford offered replicas with the same striping, special pewter/black paint scheme, unique hood and three-slat grille, and premium Recaro bucket seats, and a choice of turbo-four or regular V-8 engines. Race-day decals (all the lettering details) were included for dealers to apply if the customer wished. In many cases these cars were sold with the decals not applied but rolled up and placed in the trunk, for the customer to apply later.

This car has bee repainted its original factory color and the decals appear correct and are placed in the correct locations.

Medium Blue Glow 1979 Mustang Cobra Hatchback The 1979 Mustang Cobra options package was originally $1179 and included the 2.3 liter, turbo-charged, four cylinder; hood scoop; forged metric aluminum wheels with three main wide slotted spokes(replaced with 1993+ wheels on this car); blacked out window trim, body side and bumper trim, and lower body; sport mirrors, color keyed rear quarter window louver panels; tachometer and instrument cluster panel; and sport tuned exhaust with bright tailpipe tips. The hood graphics was an additional $78.
