(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Frank Cate Ford of Elk Grove, California also sold Rainbow of Colors Mustangs in 1968. This ad is from the February 22, 1968 edition of the Sacramento Bee from Sacramento, California. They advertise it as the "Rainbow Sale" and have a bunch of 1968 Mustang hardtops in all new rainbow colors. They cost $3420.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Drew Ford from La Mesa, California also sold 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustangs. This ad was found in the Saturday, February 17, 1968 edition of the San Diego Union newspaper. Drew advertises the 1968 Rainbow of Colors hardtops as having 695x14 whitewall tires, tinted glass, push-button radio, heater, defroster, deluxe seat belts, deep-file nylon carpeting, and available in standard colors or the all-new "Mod" Rainbow Colors of Pink, Coral, Orange, Cream, Yellow, Gold, Green, and Blue. Not a bad price either - at $2525. Drew Ford closed it doors in at the end of 2014.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Suburban Ford in Auburn, California sold 1968 Rainbow Of Colors Mustang hardtops. This ad is from the February 7, 1968 edition of the Sacramento Bee newspaper. The ad talks about 10 specially new, turned-on colors. It almost looks like you order one - based on you choosing the custom equipment and color. The Mustang Rainbow Price is pretty low at $2359.

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) This is a Madagascar Orange 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang with a J-code, 230hp, 302 cubic inch, 4-barrel V8. This car was a special order car from the San Jose, California area. Besides the special order paint it came with automatic transmission, white sidewall tires, center console, power disk brakes, power steering, AM radio, tinted glass, deluxe seat belts, remote left hand mirror, and deluxe wheel covers which included the center red cap to the standard full wheel covers. The vinyl roof may have been a dealer added option. The Rainbow of Colors was an east coast promotion which featured special order paint in a rainbow of colors. I got to see this car in person. Its been repainted but its in very good condition. We also have a sister to this car since it shares the same special order number.

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) Front view of a Madagascar Orange 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang hardtop with special order paint, louvered hood, and black vinyl roof visible in this photo. Is that a Phillips 76 antenna ball?

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) I saw this car in person. The special order paint is just as bright inside a garage as it is in the bright sun.

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) That's the area around Monroe, Washington, in the background. I live in the area. Vinyl roofs were usually added by the dealer as an upgrade since it was such a popular option. There were many colors and patterns, including a crazy paisley pattern. Luckily this special order Mustang has a standard black one.

(from page 2 of the 1969 Collection) Peter Manson's restored Poppy Green, 1969, Russ Davis Special / Rainbow of Colors, Super Cobra Jet, Mach 1 fastback was our Attitude of the Week for March 8th, 2008. This amazing Mach 1 was one of 10 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina California to promote his dealership and most likely his racing cars. We actually have its sister on our site. Peter has done extensive research as well as restoration on his car. The Rainbow of Colors was a west coast primarily 1968 sales promotion which offered new Mustang owners many sporty upgrades as well as one of 13 or 14 special order bright colors. Many of these cars were base models. New information on Russ Davis shows that this special order may have been for a racing promotion since the several race car drivers were salesmen including Gas Ronda with his famous brightly colored Cobra Jet racer.

(from page 2 of the 1969 Collection) Here is a close-up of the correct wheels for this car. This view also shows off the functional Cobra Jet shaker style hood scoop, hood pins, and grille mounted fog lamps. Peter is probably the second owner of this car, since he found it only a few miles away from the original dealer in California. Peter has also done extensive research on his Poppy Green color WT7034 and the other colors offered in the Rainbow of Colors west coast promotion.

(from page 12 of the 1969 Collection) This special order 1969 Sportsroof is being restored by David Laidlaw of Chesterfield, Derbyshire in the U.K. Hopefully we will get more photos as the restoration progresses. We think it maybe a late part of the Rainbow of Colors West coast promotion. David writes, Bought the car from Colorado Springs back in 2007. Comes with Marti Report verifying its authenticity. Car was a combination of grey primer and yellow when bought, but on stripping down all the internal box sections and floor pans were pink. Originally had a 6 cylinder engine but arrived with a 302 lump and a three speed top loader in the trunk. It is now undergoing a complete tear down and ground up restoration to restore it to its original colour. Bodywork was excellent apart from the rear, trunk and bottom of rear arches. Rear rails were excellent. I have also replaced a section of rear floor (small hole), front footwells and the inner panel below the battery tray. It still has original drivers door and tag (paint code blank, DSO 737479) and only the passenger door and hood have been replaced since it was built. I have restored the 302 lump and gearbox but have retained all the original spec running gear and replaced with new, like-for-like. Don't have a go at me for spraying the engine bay pink, I know it should be satin black but we tend to colour the bay up in U.K. restorations and I can tell you this involves a staggering amount of preparation to get it to look good. The car should be finished in the next year and will be running on original genuine Ford Magnum 500's that I have located. Exhaust is a Flowmaster twin pipe setup and all chromework has either been replaced or restored along with glass and new interior. Should look a right eyefull when complete and is probably the only 69 SportsRoof in the U.K. in pink and may only be on of a handful of survivors in the World. I have not come across another one to date.

(from page 12 of the 1969 Collection) David tells us the data tag reads 63A sportsroof body style, 2A black interior trim, 19L scheduled for assembly on the 19th of November, 737479 Salt Lake City order district with special order number 7479, 6 3.00:1 rear axle ratio, and 1 3-speed manual transmission. We think this is a Rainbow of Colors promotion carry-over car since it matches other cars found in California also built in the San Jose plant (R, second digit in the VIN). The Rainbow of Colors promotion was a California/Utah promotion which featured special ordered colors. Although heavily promoted from February through June of 1968, we've seen elements of this promotion extending well into the 1969 production year.

(from page 16 of the 1969 Collection) Special Order Yellow 1969 Mustang Mach 1 fastback with a 360hp (at 5400rpm), 428 cubic inch, 4 barrel, Super Cobra Jet, V8 engine. This restored car is one of the 10 special paint cars ordered by Russ Davis Ford, Covina California for a special promotion. We are hunting through the newspapers of the time to determine what the promotion was. It could have been a 1969 carry-over of the "Rainbow of Colors" West Coast Promotion, or a "Gas Ronda" special promotion. The Rainbow of Colors promotion offered new Mustang owners one of up to 13 special "Rainbow of Colors." This car has been repainted Ford Special Paint WT6135, which a a little more orange than what we believe is the original Yellow in this group of 13 colors. But WT6135 is a period Ford special order paint! This combined with some newspaper articles of the time says that funny car racer Gas Ronda was heavily sponsored by Russ Davis in 1969 and Gas Ronda drove a modified bright "orangey reddish" Mustang Mach 1. It is possible that the 10 special colored 1969 Mach 1 Mustangs ordered by Russ Davis was for a Race Car or Gas Ronda promotion. In this case a brighter yellow car may have been necessary, making the current color possibly very close to the original. What did the other 9 Mach 1 Mustangs ordered by Russ Davis look like? well here is one.

(from page 16 of the 1969 Collection) Special Order Yellow 1969 Mustang Mach 1 fastback from either the 1968-69, "Rainbow of Colors" west coast Ford promotion or a Russ Davis - Gas Ronda racing promotion. This car has custom factor paint, blacked out hood, hood pins, hood scoop, air dam, Magnum 500 wheels, and a mach 1 stripe.
