1978 was the last year of the Mustang II, the Mach 1, and the Cobra II option package. New to 1978 was the King Cobra option at $1277. The "Boss of the Mustang stable" had a giant snake decal on the hood and pinstriping around the windows, decklid, wheel lips, rocker panels, belt, and over-the-roof area; a large front and rear spoiler, rear quarter flares, spoke wheels, and the 5.0L V8. The Cobra II got a new stripe tape treatment mid-year with tri-color tape stripes, large "Cobra" block letters midlevel on the side and decklid spoiler, a Cobra decal on the back spoiler, and a Cobra II snake emblem on a black grille. The Mach 1 remained using the 2.8L V6, styled wheels with white lettered tires, black bumpers, black lower body side paint, and a brushed aluminum instrument panel with full instrumentation.

Mustang Ghia
The 1978 Ghia luxury group included the half vinyl top, bodyside color keyed body side moldings, bumper guards, wheel covers, and a luxury interior. The 1978 Ghia upgrade did not include one of the more powerful 1978 Mustang engines. The Ghia emblem is just visible behind the rear quarter side window.

Mach 1
The 1978 Mustang Mach 1 included the 104hp 170ci (2.8L) 2-barrel 6-cylinder engine, styled wheels with raised white lettered tires, front and back black rear bumpers, lower black body side paint, brushed aluminum instrument dash panel, and full instruments package.

Mustang Cobra II
The 1978 Mustang Cobra II got a new stripe tape treatment mid-year with tri-color tape stripes, large "Cobra" block letters mid level on the side and decklid spoiler, a Cobra decal on the back spoiler, and a Cobra II snake emblem on a black grille. Standard on the 1978 Cobra came flat black window moldings, black quarter-window and back-light louvers, black rocker panels, and dual color-keyed racing mirrors. King Cobra
New to 1978, was the King Cobra option at $1277. Monroe Handler
The 1978 Monroe Handler Mustang was a body kit created to promote the Monroe Handler series street performance shock absorbers. Creative Car Products sold the 8-piece fiberglass body kit. Pieces included the front air dam, rear spoiler, rear body panel, all 4 fenders. The kit was called the "Handler II". It was designed by Dave Kent. One (original) car was built with a metal body kit. Six more were built using fiberglass components to be given away as contest prizes.
