Hatchback

The 1976 Mustang II continued with a few changes and new option packages. All base models were classified as MPG models to emphasize the fuel economy features. The 2.8L V6 was now available with an automatic transmission. Two new option packages were the Stallion Group and the Cobra II package. The Stallion had a black grille and surround moldings without the emblem, black window moldings and wiper arms, bright lower-body side moldings, Stallion decals, styled steel wheels, and black lower quarter panels and bumpers. The Cobra II package included front and rear spoilers, simulated hood scoop, quarter window louvers, and snake emblems on a white with blue stripes or black with gold stripes paint scheme. The Cobra graphics were designed by Jim Wangers, who is credited with fathering the Pontiac GTO, and the entire $325 option package was okayed by Carroll Shelby.

Ghia Luxury
The 1976 Mustang Ghia optioned coupe included a half vinyl roof, hood striping, bodyside moldings, velour cloth interior color-keyed sun visors and headliner, and center console. The Ghia Luxury Group was offered between 1974 to 1981. In 1976 the Ghia package added $334 to the standard notchback coupe (or two-door sedan). Ghia was a group of Italian designers which Ford acquired a controlling interest in 1970.

Mach 1
The 1976 Mustang Mach 1 included an engine, wheels, and interior upgrade as well as all the Mach 1 badging. A detailed list of the standard 1976 Mach 1 offerings include: steel-belted radial tires; tachometer, ampmeter, and temperature gauges; contoured bucket seats, color-keyed cut pile carpeting, fold down rear seat, styled steel wheels with trim rings, and dual remote control mirrors.

Cobra II
Most exciting to 1976 was the introduction of the Mustang Cobra II upgrade package which could be added to any of the hatchback body styles including the Mach 1. The Cobra II package included front and rear spoilers, simulated hood scoop, quarter window louvers, and snake emblems on a white with blue stripes or black with gold stripes paint scheme. The Cobra graphics designed by Jim Wangers credited for fathering the Pontiac GTO and the entire $325 option package okayed by Carroll Shelby. See our 1976 Cobra Data Explorer for more information.

Stallion
The 1976 Mustang Stallion sports package had a black grille and surround moldings without the emblem, black window moldings and wiper arms, bright lower-body side moldings, Stallion decals, styled steel wheels, and black lower quarter panels and bumpers. It was common to combine the Stallion options package with the baselevel MPG 2.3 liter engine.

On an invoice, we see this listed as a Black Midnight option.

MPG
The 1976 Mustang MPG package was the name given to a Mustang II with the base level 4-cylinder engine.
