(from page 60 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a newspaper advertisement we found showing a limited edition special called The Golden Mustang which was available at least in the Illinois/Iowa area. It says the Golden Mustang comes with special gold exterior, distinctive emblem, wheel covers, whitewalls, hood-mounted turn indicators, hood vent louvers - in addition to all standard equipment. Specially priced while they last. Because of the special gold paint, we'd expect the door data tag to have a 4 digit code following the DSO code (maybe 43 for Rockford or 45 for Davenport). This advertisement is from Myers Ford in the February 23rd, 1968 edition of the Freeport Journal, Freeport, Illinois. We found identical advertisements by Williams Ford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Fraher Ford of Pontiac, Illinois. If it were not for the "distinctive emblem", we would believe this to be an advertisement for the January Gold Color of the Month Mustang national special. As far as we know the Color of the Month specially painted Mustangs were not limited models and did not have special emblems.

(from page 60 of the 1968 Collection) Another newspaper advertisement for a special gold painted Mustang hardtop. This ad is from M&M Ford in the February 7th, 1968, edition of the Muscatine Journal of Muscatine, Iowa. This might be one of the January, Gold, Color of the Month promotional Mustangs, we are checking.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) This Meadowlark Yellow 1968 High Country Special Mustang hardtop was at the 2010 Mustang Club of America Grand Nationals held in Bellevue, Washington. Over 1000 Mustangs showed up over the two day event hosted by the Northwest Mustang Club. There is a high country special badge on the side scoop.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) The High Country Special was offered in the Denver area and featured the rear wing, fog lamps, and side scoops from the Shelby GT500, sport wheel covers, louvered hood, side stripes, and High Country Special badges.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) This 1968 High Country Special has the 289 cubic inch, 2 barrel, V8 engine under the hood.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) I photographed this Seafoam Green 1968 Mustang hardtop at the 2010 MCA Grand Nationals held just outside Seattle in Bellevue, Washington. Seafoam green is one of my favorite Mustang colors, and the color on this car was very impressive. This car also has a pin stripe, wire wheels, and a 289ci V8 engine.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) Left front view of a Seafoam Green 1968 Mustang hardtop with wire wheels, pin stripes, louvered hood, and a 289ci V8 engine.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) Base level Seafoam Green 1968 Mustang hardtop with wire wheels and pin stripe, rear right view.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) View of a 1968, Ford, Mustang, C-code, 289 cubic inch, V8 engine.

(from page 61 of the 1968 Collection) Close-up of the wire wheels.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) Passionate Pink 1968 Mustang hardtop which was part of the Color of the Month promotion when new. It was the February color - for Valentines Day. This one has a white interior and a white vinyl top.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) Passionate Pink 1968 Color of the Month Mustang hardtop, left side view.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) This car is bright! The wide white wall tires go well with the white top.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) This is the 200ci 115hp in-line 6-cylinder engine. The engine is small. You can see the ground on both sides.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) The interior is white. It has an aftermarket console. I bet that steering wheel is difficult to keep clean.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Ever hear about the Mississippi, Louisiana 1968 Dixie Special limited edition Mustang? Neither did we until we discovered this series of newspaper advertisements from several Mississippi and Louisiana dealerships between February 27th and March 29th of 1968. This ad was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 15th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. From this ad we see that the Dixie Special was a limited number of specially built Mustang, Fairlane hardtop, and Ford XL fastbacks for the Dixie area. From the other advertisements in this set we see that the Dixie Special included a special paint job, a Dixie Special license plate, and an emblem on every unit. It doesn't appear that just one color was used since this advertisement says Special Colors. From the last ad we know that at least one was a light yellow and most of the ads state a Mustang hardtop. We also think the Dixie Special emblem is the 11 star badge with the Dixie Special lettering shown at the bottom of each ad. Probably 11 stars for each of the states in the original Confederate Union. Now the hunt is on to find one of these Mustangs! Could this be one of them? The DSO, date, and special color matches. This ad shows some new 68 Ford cars on a car carrier. The two Mustangs on top look like GTs. They have the fog lights in the grille and C-stripes on their sides. It is interesting that they have the economy dog-dish style hub caps. Many of the 60s cars were ordered this way.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) This ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. This is the only advertisement we found for the Dixie Special Mustang which specifies a Dixie Special license plate. The full version of this ad is on the next page.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) Here is the full ad for the Dixie Special Mustang was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. It doesn't show the Mustang, but it does in the text.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) The is one of the earlier advertisement we've found for the Dixie Special Mustang which was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the February 29th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. We think this is a Ford designed ad for the Dixie Special since we also found the exact ad used by several dealers in the area including Reliable Ford of Ruston, Louisiana. This ad mentions the Dixie Special emblem and the special paint.

(from page 66 of the 1968 Collection) We've found several 1968 Dixie Special Mustang advertisements from Bubba Oustalet Ford of Jennings, Louisiana which is still there at the same location. This Dixie Special Mustang is a hardtop with vinyl roof, bucket seats, magic-air heater & defroster, seat belts, shoulder harness belts, back-up lights, nylon carpets, Dixie Special Emblem, windshield washers, and all vinyl upholstery for $2,320. This ad was in the February 27th edition of the Jennings Daily News of Jennings, Louisiana.
