(4 photos of a 1968 Spanish Gold (Black Hills Gold) Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) This amazing 1968 white vinyl top Mustang owned by Mal Hillier of Melbourne, Australia, has all the codes and special order color to be a Spanish Gold 1968 Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotional Mustang and was our Attitude of the Week for April 26th, 2009. It was built in San Jose, ordered in Los Angeles, under a special order with special paint WT3822. Mal writes: My Mustang was imported in to Australia from Los Angeles as a running car and I purchased it from an importer. I knew little about Mustangs and the hobby grew from there. The body and Paint have been refurbished and the color has been professionally matched to the original color in the trunk. Body was rust free fortunately. The Mustang was in very good original condition when purchased and I drove it home, I have done most of the mechanicals and put it all together my self, I also have the original owners manual and is a matching numbers car. But most of all, I love driving it. Spanish Gold shares the same paint code as Black Hills Gold used in January 1968 for the Color of the Month Mustang promotion. The Color of the Month promotion offered a special ordered color and sport options for each of the first 4 months of 1968. Black Hills Gold was offered in January for the New Years; Passionate Pink in February for Valentines day; Emerald Green in March for Saint Patrick's Day, and Eastertime Coral for April. (4 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) Scott Rear of Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada sent us this photo of his Sunlit Gold 1968 Golden Nugget Special Mustang hardtop with its original 289ci 2V V8 engine. This original Golden Nugget Special was purchased from Perry Morrell Motors which used to be in Silverton Oregon. Scott says, In the process of restoring her now. I am looking for images of the dash plaque that came with the car so I can reproduce one. The vinyl roof has been removed in the pictures. 525 of these cars were built and sold in the Seattle area and came with 289 cubic inch 2V V8 engine, C4 automatic transmission, louvered hood, black stripes, black vinyl top, black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. Check out the ad I found in the January 26th, 1968, edition of the Seattle Times.

(13 photos of a 1968 Lime Gold Green Mustang GT California Special Hardtop) This Lime Gold 1968 Mustang GT California Special hardtop was our Attitude Of The Week for December 1st, 2007. The California Special options group included a Shelby style decklid with a spoiler, unique taillights, and a blacked-out grille with out Mustang identification. In the CS option the GT was purposely missing from the normal GT wheelcovers. A similar option package was available in Colorado called the High Country Special.

(4 photos of a 1968 Lime Gold Green Mustang Hardtop) Lime Gold 1968 Mustang hardtop owned by Mark Sommers from Broadmeadows Vic, Australia. It has a C-code 302 4V V8 engine with tri-y headers feeding dual Flowmaster mufflers. It has an automatic transmission. Mark adds, "It was imported into Australia January 2010. It was purchased by me September 2010. It's only travelled 3000 miles since full restoration - the last owner (in America) owned the car since 1987. It has GT pack on board but not a factory addition."

(1 photo of a 1968 Special Gold Paint Mustang Golden Mustang Limited Edition Hardtop) Russell Crull may have found an Iowa/Illinois specially gold painted 1968 territorial special edition Mustang called the Golden Mustang Limited Edition. The special promotional Mustangs featured special gold paint, louvered hood, sport wheel covers, and a special Golden Mustang Limited Edition badge. Russell ordered a Marti report which confirmed that his car is a Golden Mustang and it was ordered by Bemis Motor in Oregon, IL and sold in April of 1968. Stay tuned for more information.

(1 photo of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) Sunlit Gold 1968 Gold Nugget Special Mustang hardtop which was only sold in the Seattle/Oregon area. We are still working to determine if a special darker version of Sunlit Gold called Anniversary Gold was used, but the ad from 1968 says Sunlit Gold. Other standard options in the Gold Nugget special package was a 4 speed manual transmission, power steering, AM radio, center console, deluxe seat belts, black vinyl roof, performance tires, wheel covers, louvered hood, and front fascia integrated turn signals.

This car has the 6-cylinder engine and is therefore known as the 1968 Sprint "A" Package. The door tag on this car reads 65CI6A05D712W: 65C 2-door hardtop, I Lime Gold metallic exterior paint, 6A black bucket seats, 05D assembled on the 5th of April, 71 ordered in the Los Angeles area, 2 2.79:1 rear axle ratio, and 2 automatic C4 transmission.

(5 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) This is a special edition Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang Golden Nugget Special hardtop. It has the original 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The owner tells us, "The 1968 Golden Nugget Special or Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustang was an Oregon/Seattle promotion which took a 1968 hardtop and offered it in Sunlit Gold (color code Y, usually followed with a '5' to indicate the black hood, and special order number 1111 after the 74 DSO found on the door data tag) although any of the standard or special Mustang colors could be ordered. Also with this package came the louvered hood with black painted inserts, black vinyl top, a black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. 481 Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustangs were actually produced of the 525 scheduled to be offered through the promotion. More pictures are available to the potential buyer."

(2 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Hardtop) Check out this Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang hardtop. It's owned by David McDowall from Seattle, Washington. It has it's original 289ci V8 engine and an automatic transmission. David purchased it in Woodinville, Washington. He is the 3rd owner. He's wondering if its could possibly be an Oregon/Washington "Golden Nugget Northwest" dealer special. It doesn't have the DSO of 1111 which is on the other Golden Nugget cars. It does have the same paint and trim codes as the Golden Nugget Special but it was built one month before the earliest batch we have found. It may have been the inspiration for the special?

(9 photos of a 1968 Lime Gold Green Mustang Hardtop) Lime Gold 1968 Black vinyl Mustang hardtop with aftermarket bright wheels and a 195hp (4600rpm), 289 cubic inch, 2 barrel V8 engine. This is not the original exterior color, although the ivy gold interior seats are original.

(8 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Hardtop) Sunlit Gold 1968 Mustang hardtop with black vinyl roof, aftermarket wheels, metal rocker panel trim, and a rebuilt 289ci V8 and Tremec T5 5 speed manual transmission.

(12 photos of a 1968 Black Hills Gold Mustang Color Of The Month Hardtop) This 1968 Mustang hardtop was originally ordered by Galloways Garage, Inc of Newburgh, New York as a Sprint B with automatic transmission, special Black Hills Gold paint (Gold Metallic WT3822), and blacked out louvered hood. The Sprint B came with a V8 engine, argent style wheels, and GT fog lamps. Two 1968 Mustang promotions come to mind: the Anniversary gold with black striped louvered hood Seattle area Golden Nugget Special, and the Black Hills Gold January Color of the Month rumored to be in the Denver area only. Both these special promotional cars were built in the San Jose plant (VIN 8R...) where this car was built in Metuchen, New Jersey (VIN 8T...); therefore, technically this car may be neither but it was ordered with the same paint as the January Color of the Month Black Hills Gold. During the restoration of this car, the wheels have been changed to later Magnum 500 wheels.

(4 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop Advertisement) Advertisement for the 1968 Seattle area Golden Nugget special Mustang we found in the January 26th, 1968 edition of the Seattle Times. We found several of these advertisements in the January and February issues of the Seattle Times newspaper to promote the 525 specially painted and optioned Mustangs. This advertisement says, "Exclusive for this area only! Specially ordered, specially painted Mustangs, each with a golden plaque for the dash panel bearing the customer's name. Sunlit gold color, with black vinyl top, black hood panels. Black stripe. Whitewalls. Wheel covers. Plus all the better ideas that make Mustang America's favorite, most imitated sports car. More Mustang than ever for '68." This ad also shows what the golden dash plate looks like (of course in black and white and in a different scale...) We think this advertisement was payed for by Ford since it has no local dealership listed, which may mean that the Golden Nugget Special promotion was a Ford promotion rather than a group of dealers. Another indication is the special order number of 1111 which appears on the door data tag of each car after the DSO code of 74 indicating the Seattle area. This 1111 code appears to be special since it was also used in 1966 for the 50 special limited edition Millionth Anniversary Mustangs.

(7 photos of a 1968 Sunlit Gold Mustang Golden Nugget Special Hardtop) I photographed this Sunlit Gold 1968 Golden Nugget Special at the 2011 Mustang Round-up car show in Bellevue, Washington. It was actually one of two Golden Nugget Specials at the show. 525 of these were built for a special promotion in the Seattle area. Included in the package was a golden plaque for the dash panel bearing the customer's name, Sunlit Gold paint, black vinyl top, black hood panels, black stripe, whitewalls, and sport wheel covers. Checkout the Seattle Times advertisement I found on this special promotion.

(3 photos of a 1968 Special Gold Mustang Golden Mustang Limited Edition Hardtop Advertisement) Newspaper advertisement we found for the 1968 Golden Mustang Limited Edition which was available at least in the Illinois/Iowa area. It says, The Golden Mustang comes to Ford Country. America's unmistakable, favorite sports car. Specially painted Golden Mustangs for this area only. Special emblem. Special price. First come, first served. Some of the features shown are hood vent louvers, hood-mounted turn-indicators, floor-mounted stick, bucket seats, special gold paint, wheel covers, full carpet, whitewalls, and special emblem. The emblem is shown (probably in gold and black) with a star and the Golden Mustang Limited Edition lettering. We just got confirmation that these cars exist and have a blank paint code indicating a non-standard production special gold paint and that they were order in the Davenport Iowa area. We found this advertisement in the February 15th edition of the Monticello, Iowa, Express newspaper placed by Freese Motors. We also found the exact ad in the February 19th, 1968 edition of the Cedar Rapids Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; another by "Service Motor Sales" on 881 Wells Street, Burlington, Iowa; another at Winebrenner-Dreusicke Ford, 1 East College, Iowa City; one from Harold Triem Ford in Postville, Iowa; and one from Grant Williams Ford Sales 'FORDTOWN' on First ave east at 40th street, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
