(from page 57 of the 1968 Collection) Somewhere in here is the original color which is a pretty close match to the newer paint.

(from page 64 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a key Ford newspaper advertisement for the West 1968-69 Rainbow of Colors promotional sale which allowed new Mustang owners choices in "wild" special order colors as well as sporty upgrades. It is the earliest newspaper advertisement we have found, and it appears to be one created by Ford which allows participating dealers to add their name and address to the bottom. The advertisement doesn't give much information other than that there are 10 special colors, limited to 500 Mustangs, and only offered in the West. We think that due to the success of this promotion, some dealerships extended it beyond 500 Mustangs, included more than 10 colors, and extended the promotion into 1969. We found this advertisement in the February 14th, 1968 edition of the Ukiah Daily Journal of Ukiah, California.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) This advertisement is from Galpin Ford of North Hills, Los Angeles; found in the February 16th, 1968 edition of The Valley News and Green Sheet of Van Nuys, California. Galpin Ford is one of the largest Ford dealerships which is still around today. This advertisement is significant since it not only lists the names of some of the colors but also indicates that the promotion was available on more than just Mustangs. In this advertisement the Rainbow Sale included Mustangs, the Galaxie, and 2-door Falcon. The ad says, Colors you never dreamed you would see on an automobile are being unveiled today during a spectacular Rainbow Sale at Galpin Ford Square. Orange ice, hot pink chocolate and razzle-dazzle yellow are just a few of the dozens of exclusive colors you will find on brand new '68 Fords at Galpin, where an exciting Shower of Value awaits you. Other Ford dealers in the area were also showing off specially painted cars, we have found several which were scheduled to be assembled on the same date as this ad. This advertisement also proves that the promotion did overlap the four month 1968, Color of the Month, Mustang promotion which shared some of the same special order exterior paint colors.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a later ad (Feb 24th, 1968) from Galpin Ford of North Hills, Los Angeles, California showing a different list of colors and Ford models for the promotion. It says, Just imagine -- brand new 1968 Fords painted orange ice, hot pink, yummy yellow, and swiss chocolate. You'll find them right now at Galpin Ford Square, along with dozens of other Galpedelic colors making their debut at a spectacular Rainbow Sale. Fairlanes and Cortina Model C's were included in this sale. This is only the top part of the advertisement.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) This ad probably would not run today, but it shows the Mustang Rainbow Specials at Henry S. Day Ford of Salt Lake City, Utah. We found this ad in the March 16th, 1968 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune. It is nice because it shows that the Rainbow of Colors Mustang promotion not only ran in California but also in Salt Lake City, but it also lists some of the color names such as: Powerful Purple, Chartreuse, Passionate Pink, Coral, Sunlit Gold, and Acapulco Blue. The last two were standard 1968 Mustang colors.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Rainbow Colors of Stone Yellow, Turned-on Orange, Gremlin Green, Flower Orchid, Beatnik Blue, and Poppy Pink are available at Flandro Ford advertised in the Idaho State Journal - March 21, 1968, Pocatello, Idaho. Another Rainbow of Colors promotional advertisement which lists some great color names and shows that the promotion included the Idaho area, or at least the area served by the Salt Lake City Ford ordering district since that was the closest to Pocatello, Idaho.. From the equipment list, it appears that this sale was for all body styles and options of Mustangs.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Pick your Mustang from a Rainbow of Colors. This Capital Ford advertisement is from the Independent Record - April 1, 1968, Helena, Montana. It shows a Rainbow of Colors promotional sale also extended into the Montana area which was closest to the Ford ordering district of Salt Lake City which was closest. We bet this was a very colorful advertisement with different colored cars and a colorful title. This promotion does advertise wild colors in a "Color Me Wild" sale, but we are unsure if these were standard colors or special order colors. Although does state that they are in stock and that there is a limited supply.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Wild new colors for wild new Mustangs says this 1968 Mustang advertisement. This advertisement is from Givan Ford, published in the The Daily Herald, in Provo, Utah, on April 1st, 1968. This advertisement is significant because it clearly shows that the Rainbow promotion was available not only in the San Jose and LA area but also in Salt Lake City. Provo is just south of Salt Lake. I cut this ad in half and positioned the parts side by side. Originally this ad went along the entire right side of the newspaper page.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) We've ordered 30 colors including the New Rainbows for this sale! says a June 6th, 1968, Independent Press Telegram newspaper advertisement by Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach, California. This is one of the 1968-69 West coast Rainbow of Colors promotional advertisements we have found.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) See All the Mustang Rainbow colors! Ten colors to choose from. says Glen Organ Ford of Long Beach, California. This is an advertisement we found in the March 2nd, 1968 edition of the Independent Press Telegram about the West coast 1968-69 Rainbow of Colors promotion.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) We have ordered 30 different colors, all new for this Rainbow Mustang Sale says Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach, California in the Independent Press Telegram on March 10th, 1968. This is an early newspaper advertisement for the 1968-69 West coast Rainbow of Colors promotion. Other advertisements from Mel Burns Ford clarifies that 10 of these cars are special order colors picked specifically for this sale. I cut this ad in half and positioned them side by side, originally the ad went along the entire right side of the newspaper page.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) We have ordered 30 different colors, including the New Mustang Rainbow colors, for this Sale! says Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach, California in this March 29th, 1968 ad in the Independent Press Telegram. This advertisement describes some of the features on these Mustangs: padded dash, back-up lights, side air scoop, bucket seats, carpets, courtesy lights, door locks and checks, vinyl door trim, dual horns, outside mirror, floor shift, cowl aire ventilation intakes, windshield washers, etc. And all for $2369.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) This June 13th, 1968, Salt Lake Tribune advertisement from Larson Ford shows that both 1968 California Special fastbacks and Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustangs were available in the Salt Lake City area.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) This ad from Canoga Park Ford, in the The Valley News and Green Sheet, of Van Nuys, California, on 6-9-1968, shows a Rainbow of Colors promotional sale and its details of the car. See the next picture for an enlargement.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a close-up of the Larson Ford, Rainbow of Colors promotion, newspaper advertisement from June 9th, 1968. It says that the car comes with air conditioning, 289ci V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, radio, heater, tinted glass, wheel covers, white side wall tires, and a color of the "Nationally Advertised Rainbow colors not ordinarily available". We've found advertisements from the San Jose, LA, Salt Lake City, Idaho, and Montana areas for this promotion.

(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) We think this is a Rainbow of Colors promotional advertisement from Givan Ford of Provo, Utah just south of Salt Lake City we found in Provo the Daily Herald of June 27th, 1968. The first photo from this set is an earlier advertisement from Givan. This ad is interesting because it shows the Rainbow of Colors being applied to a Sprint 200 hardtop which is more common to the cars we have found for this promotion.
