(15 photos of a 1968 Sierra Blue Mustang GT Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) This probably a one of a kind Sierra Blue 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional GT Mustang hardtop. It has a black vinyl roof, aftermarket wheels, black side C stripe, vented hood, fog lamps, metal rocker panel trim, and a 390ci V8 engine. Scott Johnson's family bought this car in the mid 1970's from a local dealer, probably only one other owner. During the 70s the car was repainted to a match of its original factory color. Scott says that everyone thought that this could not have been a factory color since nothing like it is on the 1968 Mustang color charts until he recently ordered a Marti Report which showed the car as one of the Rainbow of Color promotional GT hardtops and it was painted Sierra Blue. The 1968-69 Rainbow of Colors promotion offered 13 special colors, one of them was Sierra Blue. This amazing car was our Attitude Of The Week for November 23, 2008. I got this car in 1990 and finished restoring it in 1996.
It was not show room quality, but it was a very nice car. For the entire time I've had it, I was misreading the data plate and didn't know exactly what the car was. Even few years ago I did search on internet of Orange 68 Mustang, and got nothing. Just within the past few weeks I finally
found out the car was a part of the Rainbow Mustang promotion of 68
and 69. I don't have the original engine in it because when I got the
car someone had put a straight six in it. I also had a 67 mustang with
a 289 4v that was usable so I rebuilt it. Also no longer have the C4
automatic for it. I put in the Ford design 4 speed (RUG-E2), but no
modifications other than bolt-ons. The car only has 23,000
miles on it since restoring it, but due to it sitting outside in the
weather, it needs to be completely restored again (except the
engine, transmission, and rear end). We've included some scanned in photos after its first restoration in 1996, hopefully Dale can get us more in the future. Also take a look at our

Attitude of the Week for April 26th, 2009. It was built in San Jose, ordered in Los Angeles, under a special order with special paint WT3822. Mal writes:
My Mustang was imported in to Australia from Los Angeles as a running car and I purchased it from an importer. I knew little about Mustangs and the hobby grew from there. The body and Paint have been refurbished and the color has been professionally matched to the original color in the trunk. Body was rust free fortunately. The Mustang was in very good original condition when purchased and I drove it home, I have done most of the mechanicals and put it all together my self, I also have the original owners manual and is a matching numbers car. But most of all, I love driving it. Spanish Gold shares the same paint code as Black Hills Gold used in January 1968 for the Color of the Month Mustang promotion. The Color of the Month promotion offered a special ordered color and sport options for each of the first 4 months of 1968. Black Hills Gold was offered in January for the New Years; Passionate Pink in February for Valentines day; Emerald Green in March for Saint Patrick's Day, and Eastertime Coral for April. Rainbow of Colors promotion which featured custom colors and upgrades. Jeff writes,
I wanted to give you an update and send some new pictures of Maggie Mae. She is on the road and doing great! I entered her in the 2011 PNWMC Mustang II's R a Mustang Too Spring Show n Shine and had a blast sharing her story with others and listening to the comments like 'I didn't know they came in that color' or 'Look at that, it has a bench seat'. Over all I would have to say she was very appreciated by others as she was awarded 2nd place in the '67 - '68 Coupe Class. It was a proud day. Now I am enjoying showing her off and eager for September to arrive and with it the 4 day International Mustang Show in Spokane.

Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang which is also a Branded Special. This olive green is one of 13 special colors which a new Mustang owner could order along with several upgrades in the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion. Also during this time dealers could add a Branded Special emblem to further promote a car. Amazingly this car is both! This was the first Olive Green Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang that found us. A few months ago, Wolfgang Kohrn of
ponysite.de, contacted us about finding a unique originally painted, olive green, 1968, Mustang in the Netherlands which had all the options and special order data to indicate that it was the first car found of this unique color. This is that car which is also featured on
Wolfgang's site. So far we've only found 9 names of the 13 colors of the promotion. This green was not one of them, so we've been temporarily calling it Olive Green. If you know the official color name,
let us know. About the same time, Jeff from Oregon, emailed us on his newest purchase of an
olive green 1968 Mustang which turns out to be a sister car to Robbie's because the share the same DSO order area, special order number, and therefore ordered by the same dealer which was, Lou Gerard Motors, in Redding, California. Look at the other photos of this car, Robbie has much more information.

This car was originally ordered by her grandma Frannie in California, who picked out one of the special factory colors advertised in the "Rainbow of Colors" Ford promotion between 1968 and 1969. Karen writes,
I still drive this car regularly, but it could use some restoration, most pressingly a new hard top. I've been scouting around for a good body shop in the Raleigh NC area if you know of one. Thank! And you don't even want to see photos of my engine, it's not a pretty sight, but at only 160k, garaged most of her life in California, I'm still able to keep her going replacing part for part as they wear out. She's a good gal at 40. A

(1 photo of a 1968 Madagascar Orange Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) We received this email of a second special orange/red Mustang with DSO 710777. This one is under restoration along with a possible other special order Mustang. The owner writes,
I have recently bought a 1968 Mustang and discovered the original color was a unique orange. After searching the VIN I discovered your site. I have DSO 710777. If you look closely at the picture you can see the original color of Madagascar Orange where the drip rails where removed. Also the trunk have never been touched and is the original Madagascar Orange. I am excited to re-store her one day and preserve Mustang history. Yet another twist of fate! I also owned a 66 Mustang for over 10 years and finally began to sand her layers of paint. Well as I began to remove door panels, and look in places I found a Bubble Gum color pink. Long story short, we believe this Mustang to have been originally painted Playmate pink which was only a special order in 66 and not officially offered. So I am honored to have 2 rare painted Mustang and hope to be able to save up to restore them to their original glory!

Gonzo tells us that the car was repainted close (a bit lighter) to the original color in the 2000s time frame. There is still original Whipped Cream colored paint n the door jambs, under the hood, and in the trunk. Gonzo tells us,
"I had no idea I was buying a limited edition Mustang. My plans were to tear it apart and turn it into a 460cid monster, buttttt all that changed when I started looking into a weird DSO." The DSO is 721185 which we have already confirmed has a sister Whipped Cream ROC.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting November 30, 2014. This beauty was ordered under DSO 71-0782 and delivered to Ralph Williams Ford in Encino, California. There were 133 Mustangs ordered on the same DSO special order number. We know that some also went to Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach CA and McCoy & Mills Ford of Fullerton CA. This car was ordered new with; black paint stripe, black vinyl roof, C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, 6.95x14.4 ply rated tires, white sidewall tires, Selectaire air conditioner, AM radio, tinted glass, and wheel covers.
(2 photos of a 1968 Caribbean Coral Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Under this black paint is Caribbean Coral paint. It's a 'Rainbow of Colors' Special edition 1968 Mustang. It's owned by Brandon Salisbury. Brandon is 16 and is planning to restore the car with his Father. The Marti report states that it is a Special Paint Coral, Ford #WT9012. It was built in San Jose (8R) on 3/8/68 and ordered through the Salt Lake City DSO (73) with special order# 3061. It was sold through Gooding Ford in Gooding, Idaho. This paint was also offered on the 'Color of the Month' special edition Mustangs. This Coral Mustang was built about a month too early to be considered a 'Color of the Month' special edition. The Coral paint was an April color. The special order number on this Mustang is close to 3059 which we know is part of the 'Rainbow of Colors' promotion. We believe most of the 'Color of the Month' cars came from the Metuchen New Jersey factory, and we have never found an advertisement for the 'Color of the Month' promotion from the Salt Lake City area.

David tells us that it has a bench seat, C4 automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, and a 302ci V8 (replacing the original 289). This Rainbow Of Colors car has the 71 Los Angeles order district and 0779 special order number. We've heard of another Whipped Cream 1968 hardtop from this special order as well.

Check out the paint - this is the first one we have on our site that wears it's original shade of Whipped Cream paint. It actually has light green tone to it. It also has it's original 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The owner tells us,
"Came across this car in 2006. The second owner was selling it, having grown tired of it - saying it never has won or ever will win any prizes. I was able to met the daughter of the original owner and get some very important information on the car. Her mother bought the car off the showroom floor and loved it at first sight. The original owner kept the car in a carpeted, heated, and air conditioned garage while in California. When she moved to the mid-west she drove the car herself instead of having it hauled. When unable to drive anymore, she sold it to a neighbor, who sold it to us. The spare tire is one of the original tires that came with the car. I am happy to say the second owner was so very wrong about it not winning any prizes. It has won several times and considering it is up against cars that have been totally restored, I think is great."

This amazing car is our Attitude of the Week starting November 23, 2018. Chris says, "This Rainbow of Colors Dandelion Yellow promotion car has been in the family since brand new. My uncle owned the dealership where it was ordered for his sister in law. It has many desirable options including the original J Code 302, full Sprint B package, console, tinted glass, cruise-o-matic and others shown in the Marti report. The exterior was restored to original, and the motor has had many upgrades including Edelbrock intake and carb, Mallory distributor, MSD 6 ignition box and coil, comp cams magnum cam and roller tip rockers, hooker comp headers, flowmasters, and 2.5" pipes with dual tips."

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting June 22, 2020. Jason reached out to us to confirm. He asked,
"I think I have a rainbow of colours car. The car is in excellent condition and still retains its original body metal. It has spent years inside and never left exposed to the elements. From what I can see the car appears as if it was repainted once but I can not find anything anywhere that shows it to be painted any other colour. I sent a small paint chip in when requested by Kevin Marti so they could determine the paint code. They said it was beatnic blue..." Jason showed us a copy of the Marti Report with the WT8095 paint code match and the DSO of 710784. According to our research, this DSO matches a Beatnik Blue sibling that was delivered to Bill Ellis Ford in Rialto, California. Jason's was delivered to California Motors in Glendale, California. The dealerships are 55 miles apart.

"It was owned by my friends father. It was buried in a garage for years. His father had passed away so I have no
story on the car. Kinda upsetting, but I had noticed the car had no
paint code and I started researching and found your site and one other
that showed 1187 as my DSO code which states it was a special order
orange." The car came with a 289 V8. It now has a 351w V8 engine.

Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop in special order purple! The photo looks like a painting. Jayme owns this car and is getting ready for restoration. It has the optional J-code, 230hp, 302ci 4V V8 under the hood, GT side stripe, full wheel covers, parchment interior trim, C4 automatic transmission, and of course special purple paint. We have been looking for the purple paint that has been listed in ads for the Rainbow of Colors promotion, and this one shows it off. We think it is Ford special paint code WT9083 (see the door data tag photo for a non-faded view of this paint). This amazing car and great photo is our Attitude of the Week starting July 9th, 2022.

Its a special order 1968 Mustang hardtop which came with automatic transmission, power steering, sport tires, sport wheel covers, louvered hood, C-code 289ci V8 engine, black side stripe, and special order paint (
WT7148). It was built in the San Jose plant but under special order number 3059 from Salt Lake City. We've confirmed that the
Rainbow of Colors promotion also ran from Salt Lake City. We've been recently emailed of
another special order green painted Mustang from the same special order number by Mike in Idaho. We think both of these cars were part of the Rainbow of Colors west coast promotion. WT7148 is a close match to WT7126 which was used in this promotion.
(9 photos of a 1968 Special Green Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Mike Taylor from Meridian, Idaho found this special order green painted 1968 hardtop parked in Billings, Montana, outside, under a canvas cover. It had been there for six years. Mike sent us photos of the car as he found it and a few of getting it home. Mike is starting to restore it. It is a special ordered car with a blank paint code and special order number 3059 from Salt Lake City.
What is interesting about this car is its special color. Mike's research shows it as Ford special order code
WT7034 and was ordered with
Andrew's 1968 Special Order Green Mustang of which we also have photos of. Andrew's car is a bluish green that Marti matched to WT7148 which is an almost exact match to WT7126. Both WT7034 and WT7126 has an historical use on 1968 and 69 Mustangs since it is two of 13 colors used for the West Coast
Rainbow of Colors promotion. We've just confirmed that the Rainbow of Colors ran in the LA, San Jose, and Salt Lake City area.

Color of the Month promotion, and it was called Caribbean Coral for the 1968 to 1969 west coast
Rainbow of Colors promotion. The
Rainbow of Colors promotion allowed new Mustang owners a discount on sport options and one of 13 special order paint colors.
