Data panel found on the back side of the driver's side door. It contains all sorts of information about the car as it came from the factory. Let's decode it! The long number in the upper left corner is the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or Warranty Number as it is listed on the plate. The 8 is for the 1968 model year. The F is for the Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant. The 02 is for the fastback body style. The R is for the optional 335hp Cobra Jet engine. And the 2000473 is for the sequential unit number off that line (they start with 100001. You can decode other 1968 VINs with the help of our Data Explorer. The bottom of the Vehicle Certification Tag contains more information about the car. The 63 above the BODY stands for the fastback body style and the A is for the bucket seats. The COLOR of F is for the Gulfstream Aqua paint. The TRIM of 2K is for the Aqua colored seats. The DATE of 28E is for the 28th day of the 5th (May) month. The DSO (Domestic Special Order) is for Indianapolis district which originally ordered the car. The AXLE is 8 for the 3.55 gears. The TRANS is 5 for the 4-speed manual transmission.

The Wimbledon White with blue Lemans stripes 1968 Mustang Shelby GT-350. This Shelby has a 250 hp, 302 cubic inch, V8 engine; and was the Attitude Of The Week for 9-30-2007. In preparation for 1968 production, Shelby moved its manufacturing site from Southern California to Michigan due to the need of high quality fiberglass which was being used for more of the Shelby components. This car has the 15 x 7 inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels option.

The VIN number for the 1968 Shelby is stamped on a plate riveted to the top of the dashboard on the passenger's side. Two other locations are on the top upper flange of the right and left front fender apron which is visible only with the hood closed and on the warranty plate riveted into the driver's door. This incredible Special Orange 1968 Shelby GT500KR Mustang fastback with an R-code 428 Cobra Jet V8 is owned by Peter Disher of Wisconsin and runs one of the most interesting sites of Ford factory special colors . Peter has identified
1968 special order colors that the Shelby GT 500KR has been ordered in. This orange
is one of them. Peter writes:
Lime Gold 1968 Mustang with 195 hp (at 4600rpm), 289 cubic inch, 2 barrel, V8 engine. This is the original lime gold paint!
