Its an Eastertime Coral 1968 April Color of the Month promotional Sprint Mustang hardtop owned by John of Michigan and was our featured Attitude Of The Week for July 13th, 2008. The Color of the Month was a promotion for the first four months of 1968 where special colors were connected to main holidays for special sales: Black Hills Gold paint for the New Year celebration in January, Passionate Pink for Valentine's day in February, Emerald Green for St. Patrick's day in March, and in this case Eastertime Coral for Easter in April. Imagine an Easter Collection of Colors sale showing Eastertime Coral Mustang next to a Seafoam Green, Meadowlark Yellow, and Diamond Blue 1968 standard factory color Mustangs; and a Passionate Pink Mustang left over from the Valentine's day, February color of the month. The Ford color number for Eastertime Coral was WT9012 (6779DH Dupont, 71617 Ditzler) and was also used for the Rainbow of Colors 1968-69 West coast promotion but called Caribbean Coral. (11 photos of a 1968 Sierra Blue Mustang GT Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) This probably a one of a kind Sierra Blue 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional GT Mustang hardtop. It has a black vinyl roof, aftermarket wheels, black side C stripe, vented hood, fog lamps, metal rocker panel trim, and a 390ci V8 engine. Scott Johnson's family bought this car in the mid 1970's from a local dealer, probably only one other owner. During the 70s the car was repainted to a match of its original factory color. Scott says that everyone thought that this could not have been a factory color since nothing like it is on the 1968 Mustang color charts until he recently ordered a Marti Report which showed the car as one of the Rainbow of Color promotional GT hardtops and it was painted Sierra Blue. The 1968-69 Rainbow of Colors promotion offered 13 special colors, one of them was Sierra Blue. This amazing car was our

I got this car in 1990 and finished restoring it in 1996.
It was not show room quality, but it was a very nice car. For the entire time I've had it, I was misreading the data plate and didn't know exactly what the car was. Even few years ago I did search on internet of Orange 68 Mustang, and got nothing. Just within the past few weeks I finally
found out the car was a part of the Rainbow Mustang promotion of 68
and 69. I don't have the original engine in it because when I got the
car someone had put a straight six in it. I also had a 67 mustang with
a 289 4v that was usable so I rebuilt it. Also no longer have the C4
automatic for it. I put in the Ford design 4 speed (RUG-E2), but no
modifications other than bolt-ons. The car only has 23,000
miles on it since restoring it, but due to it sitting outside in the
weather, it needs to be completely restored again (except the
engine, transmission, and rear end). We've included some scanned in photos after its first restoration in 1996, hopefully Dale can get us more in the future. Also take a look at our

Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotional Mustang and was our
Attitude of the Week for April 26th, 2009. It was built in San Jose, ordered in Los Angeles, under a special order with special paint WT3822. Mal writes:
My Mustang was imported in to Australia from Los Angeles as a running car and I purchased it from an importer. I knew little about Mustangs and the hobby grew from there. The body and Paint have been refurbished and the color has been professionally matched to the original color in the trunk. Body was rust free fortunately. The Mustang was in very good original condition when purchased and I drove it home, I have done most of the mechanicals and put it all together my self, I also have the original owners manual and is a matching numbers car. But most of all, I love driving it. Spanish Gold shares the same paint code as Black Hills Gold used in January 1968 for the Color of the Month Mustang promotion. The Color of the Month promotion offered a special ordered color and sport options for each of the first 4 months of 1968. Black Hills Gold was offered in January for the New Years; Passionate Pink in February for Valentines day; Emerald Green in March for Saint Patrick's Day, and Eastertime Coral for April. Attitude Of The Week for the week of July 10, 2011. Jeff found this amazing car with 28K original miles on it in its original special order Olive Green paint and options as part of the West Coast
Rainbow of Colors promotion which featured custom colors and upgrades. Jeff writes,
I wanted to give you an update and send some new pictures of Maggie Mae. She is on the road and doing great! I entered her in the 2011 PNWMC Mustang II's R a Mustang Too Spring Show n Shine and had a blast sharing her story with others and listening to the comments like 'I didn't know they came in that color' or 'Look at that, it has a bench seat'. Over all I would have to say she was very appreciated by others as she was awarded 2nd place in the '67 - '68 Coupe Class. It was a proud day. Now I am enjoying showing her off and eager for September to arrive and with it the 4 day International Mustang Show in Spokane.

Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang which is also a Branded Special. This olive green is one of 13 special colors which a new Mustang owner could order along with several upgrades in the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion. Also during this time dealers could add a Branded Special emblem to further promote a car. Amazingly this car is both! This was the first Olive Green Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang that found us. A few months ago, Wolfgang Kohrn of
ponysite.de, contacted us about finding a unique originally painted, olive green, 1968, Mustang in the Netherlands which had all the options and special order data to indicate that it was the first car found of this unique color. This is that car which is also featured on
Wolfgang's site. So far we've only found 9 names of the 13 colors of the promotion. This green was not one of them, so we've been temporarily calling it Olive Green. If you know the official color name,
let us know. About the same time, Jeff from Oregon, emailed us on his newest purchase of an
olive green 1968 Mustang which turns out to be a sister car to Robbie's because the share the same DSO order area, special order number, and therefore ordered by the same dealer which was, Lou Gerard Motors, in Redding, California. Look at the other photos of this car, Robbie has much more information.
(1 photo of a 1968 Madagascar Orange Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Karen Rose in Raleigh, North Carolina owns a very rare Madagascar Orange 1968 Mustang. This car was originally ordered by her grandma Frannie in California, who picked out one of the special factory colors advertised in the "Rainbow of Colors" Ford promotion between 1968 and 1969. Karen writes,
I still drive this car regularly, but it could use some restoration, most pressingly a new hard top. I've been scouting around for a good body shop in the Raleigh NC area if you know of one. Thank! And you don't even want to see photos of my engine, it's not a pretty sight, but at only 160k, garaged most of her life in California, I'm still able to keep her going replacing part for part as they wear out. She's a good gal at 40. A

(1 photo of a 1968 Special Purple Mustang Hardtop) Erik from British Columbia is trying to find out more about this Special Order purple painted 1968 Mustang hardtop (and possibly also a Cougar) that was built early 1968 and ordered in BC, Canada (DSO B7, blank paint code). The paint appears to be Ford
WT9083 special order purple paint which was used in the
Rainbow of Colors - West Coast promotion but we have found no evidence of this promotion further north than the Salt Lake City area. The paint is over a metallic blue but the purple paint is painted everywhere as usually done by the factory when the trim is all off (we've seen other factory special painted Mustangs with a different color underneath). Erik, who owns this car, has a friend in BC who owns a Cougar with the same paint.

(4 photos of a 1968 Whipped Cream Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Whipped Cream 1968 Rainbow Of Colors Mustang hardtop owned by Gonzo from Hawaii. Gonzo tells us that the car was repainted close (a bit lighter) to the original color in the 2000s time frame. There is still original Whipped Cream colored paint n the door jambs, under the hood, and in the trunk. Gonzo tells us,
"I had no idea I was buying a limited edition Mustang. My plans were to tear it apart and turn it into a 460cid monster, buttttt all that changed when I started looking into a weird DSO." The DSO is 721185 which we have already confirmed has a sister Whipped Cream ROC.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting November 30, 2014. This beauty was ordered under DSO 71-0782 and delivered to Ralph Williams Ford in Encino, California. There were 133 Mustangs ordered on the same DSO special order number. We know that some also went to Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach CA and McCoy & Mills Ford of Fullerton CA. This car was ordered new with; black paint stripe, black vinyl roof, C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, 6.95x14.4 ply rated tires, white sidewall tires, Selectaire air conditioner, AM radio, tinted glass, and wheel covers.
(2 photos of a 1968 Caribbean Coral Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Under this black paint is Caribbean Coral paint. It's a 'Rainbow of Colors' Special edition 1968 Mustang. It's owned by Brandon Salisbury. Brandon is 16 and is planning to restore the car with his Father. The Marti report states that it is a Special Paint Coral, Ford #WT9012. It was built in San Jose (8R) on 3/8/68 and ordered through the Salt Lake City DSO (73) with special order# 3061. It was sold through Gooding Ford in Gooding, Idaho. This paint was also offered on the 'Color of the Month' special edition Mustangs. This Coral Mustang was built about a month too early to be considered a 'Color of the Month' special edition. The Coral paint was an April color. The special order number on this Mustang is close to 3059 which we know is part of the 'Rainbow of Colors' promotion. We believe most of the 'Color of the Month' cars came from the Metuchen New Jersey factory, and we have never found an advertisement for the 'Color of the Month' promotion from the Salt Lake City area.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting September 6, 2015. David tells us that it has a bench seat, C4 automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, and a 302ci V8 (replacing the original 289). This Rainbow Of Colors car has the 71 Los Angeles order district and 0779 special order number. We've heard of another Whipped Cream 1968 hardtop from this special order as well.

Check out the paint - this is the first one we have on our site that wears it's original shade of Whipped Cream paint. It actually has light green tone to it. It also has it's original 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The owner tells us,
"Came across this car in 2006. The second owner was selling it, having grown tired of it - saying it never has won or ever will win any prizes. I was able to met the daughter of the original owner and get some very important information on the car. Her mother bought the car off the showroom floor and loved it at first sight. The original owner kept the car in a carpeted, heated, and air conditioned garage while in California. When she moved to the mid-west she drove the car herself instead of having it hauled. When unable to drive anymore, she sold it to a neighbor, who sold it to us. The spare tire is one of the original tires that came with the car. I am happy to say the second owner was so very wrong about it not winning any prizes. It has won several times and considering it is up against cars that have been totally restored, I think is great."

Rainbow of Colors promotion (Hot Pink) 1968 Mustang hardtop. This car was ordered in April of 1968 which puts the car between the two promotions, but the same color (Ford#
WT9036) was used on both. Because all Rainbow of Color and Color of the Month promotional Mustangs were reported to have been built at the San Jose plant (R-code in the VIN), and this car was built at the Dearborn plant (F-code), we believe this car was dealer ordered for the late April
Easter Collection of Colors promotion which featured many of the pastel colors available on 1968 Mustangs. Besides the special order paint: this car has the deluxe full disc wheel covers; metal rocker panel trim; and the base level 115hp (at 400rpm), 200 cubic inch, 1 barrel, inline 6 cylinder engine. This is a Sprint 200 A (6 cylinder sports options package) special order car which included the deluxe wheel covers, rocker panel trim, and louvered hood sport options at a reduced cost.

This amazing car is our Attitude of the Week starting November 23, 2018. Chris says, "This Rainbow of Colors Dandelion Yellow promotion car has been in the family since brand new. My uncle owned the dealership where it was ordered for his sister in law. It has many desirable options including the original J Code 302, full Sprint B package, console, tinted glass, cruise-o-matic and others shown in the Marti report. The exterior was restored to original, and the motor has had many upgrades including Edelbrock intake and carb, Mallory distributor, MSD 6 ignition box and coil, comp cams magnum cam and roller tip rockers, hooker comp headers, flowmasters, and 2.5" pipes with dual tips."

Color of the Month promotion to celebrate Valentine's Day. The
Color of the Month Mustang promotion ran the first four months of 1968 featuring a New Years January special gold paint, pink for Valentine's Day, a March St. Patrick's Day green, and Eastertime Coral in April. All
Color of the Month Mustangs where rumored to be built in San Jose (VIN starting with 8R) and ordered for the Denver area. This car was built in San Jose but ordered in Los Angeles under special order
0778. In 1968, the San Jose plant also built special order cars with this same pink paint (
WT9036) for the 1968
Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotion. The
Rainbow of Colors cars were mainly ordered in the Los Angeles area, so this may be one of those cars instead.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting June 22, 2020. Jason reached out to us to confirm. He asked,
"I think I have a rainbow of colours car. The car is in excellent condition and still retains its original body metal. It has spent years inside and never left exposed to the elements. From what I can see the car appears as if it was repainted once but I can not find anything anywhere that shows it to be painted any other colour. I sent a small paint chip in when requested by Kevin Marti so they could determine the paint code. They said it was beatnic blue..." Jason showed us a copy of the Marti Report with the WT8095 paint code match and the DSO of 710784. According to our research, this DSO matches a Beatnik Blue sibling that was delivered to Bill Ellis Ford in Rialto, California. Jason's was delivered to California Motors in Glendale, California. The dealerships are 55 miles apart.
(4 photos of a 1968 Madagascar Orange Mustang Rainbow Of Colors Hardtop) Check this one out. It's a Madagascar Orange 1968 Mustang hardtop Rainbow of Colors. It was sent in by Bryant Hatfield from Palmer, Texas. Bryant tells us,
"It was owned by my friends father. It was buried in a garage for years. His father had passed away so I have no
story on the car. Kinda upsetting, but I had noticed the car had no
paint code and I started researching and found your site and one other
that showed 1187 as my DSO code which states it was a special order
orange." The car came with a 289 V8. It now has a 351w V8 engine.

The Passionate Pink (repaint) is the original color - the black hood stripes and hood scoop were added by the owner. Why is it painted pink? Probably because it was part of a dealer sales promotion. Both the
Rainbow of Colors and
Color of the Month promotions included this shade of pink. Since the DSO is not LA or San Jose and it wasn't built in San Jose, it's not the Rainbow of Colors. This was built in Dearborn and has a DSO of Cleveland (322391) and delivered to Beasley Ford in Columbus Ohio (dealer 42C001).
