1997 Mustang changes included a larger grille opening to match the larger fan and radiator for better cooling. All models also received the passive anti-theft system (PATS) used on the 1996 GT and Cobra. All automatic transmission had a new thicker shifter. The GT got new 17 inch wheels with a gray metallic center. And Bright Tangerine and Mystic exterior paint was replaced with Aztec Gold, Autumn Orange, and Pacific Green.

The 1997 Mustang GT came with 16 inch, star 5-spoke cast aluminum wheels (upgradeable to 17 inch 5-open-spoke aluminum wheels); upgraded axle; and the 215hp 4.6L V8 engine.

The 1997 SVT Cobra saw only a couple of changes over the 1996 model. The grille opening was enlarged and a new color, Pacific Green, was offered. Optional equipment continued to be limited to just the Preferred Equipment Package (Mach 460 sound system and leather seats) and the rear decklid spoiler.  Saleen Mustang

The 1997 Saleen Mustang continued to come in four flavors. The S-281 SOHC built from the 4.6L Mustang GT, a higher output S-281 DOHC built from the 5.8L Mustang Cobra, a S-351 version with a 5.8L V8, and a few 500hp supercharged 5.8L Saleen SR models. The S-351 model could be ordered with optional wider body panels, a carbon fiber hood, and a double rear decklid spoiler. See our 1997 Saleen Data Explorer for more information.

The 1997 Roush Mustang continued its tradition of offering the primarily appearance upgraded Stage 1; the appearance and handling improved Stage 2; and the appearance, handling, and engine upgraded Stage 3. In 1997 Roush Performance started to perform the modifications themselves rather than only dealers and authorized third parties.
