The 1988 Mustang GT came standard with the 225hp 5.0L High Output V8 engine, performance progressive rate springs, front and rear stabilizing bars, MacPherson front struts, Quadra-shocks in the rear, turbine wheels, performance tires, lower body skirts, closed grille, and upgraded interior. New to 1988 was the cheese grater rear tail lights which was a body-color-matched cover over the rear lights with rows of 6 slits.

The 1988 Saleen Mustang Saleen Mustang saw minor changes from 1987; Monroe shock absorbers, Pioneer sound system, and a Saleen 170 speedo/tach. The radar detector was no longer standard equipment. All Saleens were converted from hatchback LX, coupe LX, or convertible LX Mustang models. They all had factory 5.0L V8 engines, five-speed manual transmission, 3.08 or 3.55 rear, and 225/60VR-15 tires. See our 1988 Saleen Data Explorer for more information.

The 1988 ACS McLaren convertible customized from a 2-door coupe (notchback) continued into its second year of production with aerodynamic body panels, custom exterior paint, plain solid grille, wire looking wheels, and custom interior. No back seats in these cars. 1015 were built in 1988.

The 1988 US Mustang offered by Don Hiller and Gene Fercodini of U.S. Mustang for Ford Mustang's 25th anniversary.. To get one of these cars you had to buy a non-metallic, single colored Mustang GT from Lombard Ford of Winstead Connecticut and then ask for the optional $3,495 U.S. Mustang Trim & Performance package. This package included the gold over-the-top stripes, gold body side molding trim inserts, custom gold anodized wheels(incorrect wheels shown in example), U.S. Mustang front fender emblems, four wheel disc brakes, 3.73:1 traction-loc rear axle (standard offerings were 2.73:1 and 3.08:1), 5 speed transmission, and the SVO 140 mph speedometer.
