1964

Indianapolis 500 Pace Car
A quantity of 185 Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car hardtop replicas were sold in 1964 to the public. Not just any dealer could sell them though. They had to compete for them! The competition, called "Checkered Flag" and "Green Flag" contests, were based on the dealer's sales performance prior to the introduction of the Mustang in April of 1964. The top five dealerships in each district received a Pace Car replica. This car was won by Bennett Ford in Salt Lake City, Utah. The pace cars are all sequentially numbered (VIN) between 111500-126000. They have the same dataplate codes; 65A=hardtop, C=Pace Car White paint, 42=white & blue interior. Many were sold to customers with the stripes and lettering removed. Another thirty-seven Wimbledon White 1964 Mustang Pace Car convertibles were created for the actual Indianapolis 500 race. Three of them were modified to be actual pace cars (4-speed transmission, tuned 289ci engines, lowered suspension, and speed rated tires). Another thirty-five convertibles with red, white, or blue interiors were used as Dignitary Cars. They were auctioned to dealerships and sold to the public after the race event.

Magic Skyway Mustang
With the introduction of the Mustang at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York, Walt Disney created a unique Magic Skyway ride at the Ford Motor Wonder Rotunda. They used real Mustang convertible on the ride! There were twelve 1964 Mustang convertible converted to run on the Magic Skyway track. Their VIN range was 5F08F100003 through 100014. The breakdown were: three Wimbledon White Mustangs (5F08F100006, 5F08F100007, and 5F08F100008); three Raven Black Mustangs (5F08F100003, 5F08F100004, 5F08F100005); three Guardsman Blue Mustangs (5F08F100009, 5F08F100010, 5F08F100011), and three Rangoon Red Mustangs (5F08F100012, 5F08F100013, 5F08F100014). These cars were later replaced with 1965 Mustangs and converted for resale to the public.

Other Special Models
There are several 1964 special model Mustangs we are working on. One of them is the 1964-1966 Hobo Mustang Wagon designed by Arthur Camp. Manufactured by Dennis Devine at Joel Patrick, Inc. in Sherman Oaks. In our book we have details on the 1964 Division / Executive / Employee Special Order and Fleet Special Order which technically has been offered every year, and the 1964 Playboy Pink Mustangs.

Substitutions and additions were often selected. All GTs were built between February 1965 and August 1965.

Mustang Shelby GT-350
In 1965 Shelby American modified a lot of Wimbledon White fastbacks directly from the San Jose factory with the 271hp(289ci, V8) engine. The converted cars were named the Shelby GT-350 because there was 350 feet between Shelby's main assembly line and the engine room. Engine modifications boost its performance up to 306hp with a Cobra aluminum high rise intake manifold, 715cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor, Cobra cast aluminum finned valve covers and 6.5 quart oil pan, steel tubing "Try-Y" exhaust headers, low restriction mufflers, and dual side-exit exhaust pipes. Body modifications included a fiberglass hood with NASCAR-style pins and functional scoop, a cleaned up grill with a mustang logo which will become the 1969 Mustang standard, and all were Wimbledon White with blue 10 inch wide racing "LeMans" stripes. Interior modification included a high performance instrumented dash, a collection of different wooden steering wheels, removing the back seats and placing the spare tire there to classify it as a SCCA racing series sports car, and many others. Shelby VIN plates were affixed directly over the Ford VIN numbers. 562 units were built in 1965 which included 521 street versions($4547), 34 race-prepared models($5995), 4 drag racing versions, and 3 prototypes.

T-5 Ford
The T-5 Ford was Ford's answer to exporting Mustangs to Germany. Ford couldn't register the name "Mustang" in Germany because there were trucks with that same name. The horn button and gas caps merely said Ford. Special T-5 emblems replaced the Mustang emblems on the outside and dash of the car. The T-5 was available from 1964 to 1979.

Player's Mustang Special Edition
The 1965 Player's Mustang special edition was painted dark blue and white to match the Player's cigarette package. The Mustangs were used to promote the cigarette by the John Player and Sons division of Imperial Tobacco Canada. Besides the unique paint they all were hardtops with 200ci 6-cylinder engine, full wheel covers, and an AM radio.

Magic Skyway Mustang
Twelve 1965 Mustang convertibles were converted for use at the Magic Skyway at the 1964 Worlds Fair in New York. These replaced the twelve original early production 1964 Mustangs. 1966

Mustang GT
1966 was the second year for the Mustang GT. The GT package was very popular in 1966 because the option sold for $152.20 and included either the 225hp 289ci or the 271hp hi-performance 289ci V8 engine; dual exhaust; fog lamps; special ornamentation; disc brakes; GT racing stripes; and handling package components. Mustang Sprint 200 Limited Edition
Promoted as the Millionth Mustang Success Sale, the Sprint 200 limited edition package was offered mid 1966 when Ford worried about inventory problems with the first V8 level upgrade 289ci engine. Anniversary Gold Edition
In 1966, rumors are that 50 special ordered Anniversary Gold Mustangs were built as part of the Millionth Mustang Anniversary, special order number 1111 and sent to dealerships across the nation. Of the few that have been found, the common features include that they are all hardtops and have C-code 289ci 2-barrel V8 engine, pony interior, steel styled wheels, and special Anniversary Gold paint.

High Country Special
1966 was the first year for the High Country Special consisting of some GT special sports options but for the Colorado area which included a blue fender badge and came in Columbine Blue, Aspen Gold, or Timberline Green. 333 High Country Specials were produced and came in any body style, 6 cylinder or V8 engine, with wire or regular wheels, a special distinguishing emblem, and the unique paint color.

T-5 Ford
The Mustang name was already registered in Germany but there was a strong appetite for Mustangs especially from the US Servicemen stationed there. The T-5 was available from 1964 to 1979.

Silver Mink Limited Edition
We are working on several 1966 Limited Edition Mustangs we are collectively calling Territorial Specials since they were only offered in a few locations and a few dealers. One of them is the 1966 Silver Mink Limited Edition Anniversary Mustang offered in the tri-state area of Ohio-Pennsylvania-West Virginia area which featured special order Thunderbird Silver Mink exterior paint and a black vinyl roof. It was probably a Sprint hardtop with this special order paint and top.

The vinyl tops were pretty wild, with paisley and flower patterns. One of the emblems was a round "Branded" emblem that was typically placed on the vinyl top behind the side rear quarter window. The other emblem was a shield shaped "Branded ID" emblem on the front fender - up near the triangle vent window.

Nebraska Centennial Special Hardtop Mustang was a Sport Sprint upgraded Mustang hardtop which included one of four special order exterior paints: Centennial Blue, Lincoln Green, Summer Wheat, or Big Red. The Sport Sprint upgrades included 6-cylinder engine, white sidewall tires, full wheel covers, functional louvered hood, rocker panel moldings, chrome air cleaner, decal and vinyl covered shift lever (for automatic transmissions), and optional luggage rack. A V8 upgrade package was also available. We have not found one of these Mustang's yet but would expect them to have a 6 digit DSO code starring with a 54 for the Omaha Nebraska ordering district and a blank paint code.

Third Birthday Special
In 1967, Canada had its own special Mustang commemorating the 3rd birthday of the Mustang. Sometimes called the Third Birthday Treat hardtop it came with louvered hood, white sidewall tires, one of three colors (Candyapple Red, Springtime Yellow, or Thunderbird Diamond Green), wheel lip moldings, knitted black vinyl interior, door edge guards, rocker panel trim, and deluxe wheel covers.

Other Special Models
There are several 1967 special model Mustangs we are working on. Many of these special models were considered Territorial Special Promotional Mustangs with special exterior paint colors. One of these territorial Mustangs may have been called a Twister Special offered in Cajun Red or Lavender and in the Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana area. Not to be outdone by the San Jose Mustang plant that came out with 50 Anniversary Gold One-Millionth Production Anniversary Mustangs, each of the Ford Mustang manufacturing plants specially painted some 1967 Anniversary Gold Mustangs although each plant had its own version of the color. Another special model is the 1967 Mustang Colt from Les McLane in York, Pennsylvania. There was also a 1967 or 1968 Robie Ford Wedge Mustang from Boston. One national special promotional Mustang was the Emerald Green Saint Patrick's Day Special Model which came out in March and in High Country Special Timberline Green exterior paint. Continuing from 1966 may have also been a 1967 Easter Collection of Colors promotion. Two prototype models include the 1967 Ford/Shelby EXP 500 Little Red and the 1967 Mach 2. The 1968 Shelby featured twin hood scoops at the leading edge of the car, hood pins, fiberglass front valance, and the first American twin rectangular driving lights.

NHRA Cobra Jet / 135 Series
Fifty Wimbledon White 1968 NHRA Mustang GT Cobra Jet race cars were ordered for the 1968 National Hot Rod Association Winternationals in Los Angeles. California Special
There was a quantity of 4118 California Special (GT/CS) hardtops built in 1968. They had the same rear taillight panels and spoiler as the Shelby, fiberglass side scoops, stripes, blacked out grille, fog lights, hood locks, but did not come standard with the 1968 GT options package although 8 percent were ordered with a subset of them. All GT California Specials were built at the San Jose assembly plant and were offered with any engine and paint combination.

High Country Special
The 1968 GT High Country Special was a midyear package similar to the California Special but offered in the Colorado area. It included an engine upgrade to the C-code base V8 engine with dual exhaust, a body side stripe, 14 inch steel styled wheels, side scoop, and High Country Special side decals. Unlike the previous years, the High Country Special was offered in any of the standard 1968 Mustang colors. Thank you Arlie Moses for correcting our error on available colors

Mustang Sprint
The 1968 Sprint was originally introduced midway through the 1966 model year when Ford introduced the Millionth Mustang Sale featuring the limited-edition Sprint package which had a lot more chrome and a different engine due to engine availability problems in 1966. The Sprint option remained in later years with just the additional chrome and paint options which gave the car a GT look without the price. The 1968 Mustang Sprint option "A" consisted of GT stripes, pop-open gas cap and the full wheel covers of six cylinder Mustangs. The "B" option received the V8 engine, Argent styled steel wheels with Wide Oval Tires, and GT fog lamps. Early in 1968 this package was sold as limited-edition Mustangs "C" stripe, and by mid March called a limited edition Mustang Sprint offered in all body styles.

Golden Nugget Special
The 1968 Golden Nugget Special or Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustang was an Oregon/Seattle promotion which took a 1968 hardtop and offered it in Sunlit Gold (color code Y, usually followed with a "5" to indicate the black hood, and special order number 1111 after the 74 DSO found on the door data tag) although any of the standard or special Mustang colors could be ordered. Also with this package came the louvered hood with black painted inserts, black vinyl top, a black interior, and featured unique golden plaques on the dashboard with the original owner's name engraved. 481 Golden Nugget Limited Edition Mustangs were actually produced of the 525 scheduled to be offered through the promotion.

Rainbow of Colors
The Rainbow of colors was a 1968 (possibly 1969 also) West Coast promotion which allowed new Mustang owners to order a car in one of 13 special factory of colors which represented the colors in the rainbow. Some of these colors were Madagascar Orange, Whipped Cream, Spanish Gold, Dandelion Yellow, Hot Pink, Caribbean Coral, Forest Green, Sierra Blue, and Moss Green. See our detailed information on the Rainbow of Colors promotion.

Color of the Month
It has been thought that the 1968 Color of the Month special promotion had special Black Hills Gold paint for the New Year celebration in January, Passionate Pink for Valentine's day in February, Emerald Green for St. Patrick's day in March, and Eastertime Coral for Easter in April. The April promotion was especially interesting because dealers could show off other special 1968 Mustang pastel colors at the same time in a Easter Collection of Colors. We are starting to believe that this promotion was a little different. See our detailed information on the Color of the Month promotion.

Branded Special
Branded edition Mustangs were created by dealerships on used 65-68 Mustangs to spiff them up for resale. The Branding kit was available from Ford. The kit included choice of colored vinyl tops (in 15 colors), side stripes (in 5 colors), quarter panel chrome, and special Branded emblems. One emblem is round "Branded" emblem and is typically placed on the vinyl top behind the side rear quarter window. The other emblem is a shield shaped "Branded ID" emblem on the front fender - up near the triangle vent window.

They are all hardtops and came with Cardinal Special rear quarter panel emblem, flip-open chromed gas cap, black interior, black side "C" stripe, wheel lip moldings, wheel covers, 200ci inline six cylinder engine, and special paint (Candyapple Red and possibly Wimbledon White).

Corporate Yellow Mustang

Bullitt
The 1968 Mustang Bullitt was a Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastback used in the 1968 movie Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. It is a significant movie due one of the best car chase scenes ever filmed. The popularity of this movie has inspired many 1968 Mustang owners to create their own versions. You basically take a 1968 GT Mustang, paint it Highland Green and add American Racing Torque Thrust wheels. In 2001 Ford created their own Highland Green (avail in black too) Mustang Bullitt special model. They did it again in 2008 and 2009.

Dixie Special
Mississippi and Louisiana had its own limited edition called the Dixie Special Mustang hardtop. It featured special paint colors, a Dixie license plate, and a Dixie Special emblem. From the newspaper articles we have found, it appears that the car included other upgrades such as a louvered hood, sportier wheel covers, and vinyl top. We think there is at least one out there.

Golden Mustang Limited Edition
The Golden Mustang Limited Edition was offered in the Iowa/Illinois area and featured special gold paint, louvered hood, sport wheel covers, and a special Golden Mustang Limited Edition badge.

Special Dakota Days Gold Mustang
The Special Dakota Days Gold Mustang is a South Dakota limited edition Mustang featuring Black Hills Gold special ordered paint, sport wheels, and louvered hood. This is one of the four 1968 Color of the Month special order paints, and now the color name makes sense. Black Hills Gold definitely says South Dakota. Mustang Challenger Special
The Mustang Challenger Special was a Mississippi, dealer modified Seafoam Green hardtops 289ci V8 (4 speed manual) or 302ci V8 (3 speed manual), and Shelby intakes and a special 4118 Holley carburetor. To keep the cars light and fast they had no power options (no power steering, power brakes or A/C). There were about 21 with a 302ci V8 and a few with the 289ci V8. The 302ci, 3-speed, Challenger Special VIN numbers have been isolated to 8F01J193649-70 with DSO of 64 New Orleans where the intakes and carburetors were changed out. Similar models were offered by other dealers across the nation but promoted differently.

Mustang Colt and Lady Mustang
There are several 1968 special model Mustangs we are working on. Many of these special models were considered locally available Territorial Special promotional Mustangs which featured special exterior paint colors, special emblems and badges, and sporty options. Marsh Ford of Pennsylvania created a limited edition Mustang Colt for him and a Lady Mustang for her. Both have badges, ID plates, special dashes, sport wheel covers, and bullet-tip fender lights.

Other Special Models
There are other Special Promotional 1968 Mustangs which we are starting to know more about. The first is the Charlotte North Carolina Playboy Pink promotion, which offered 275 Mustangs painted in Playboy Pink. Another is the TCU Special Promotion which offered purple 390ci Mustangs for Texas Christian University ordered out of Davenport Iowa area. The 1968 Selig Swiger from Milwaukee offered an upgrade package. There was also a 1968 prototype from Ford. Another is the 67 or 1968 Robie Ford Wedge Mustang. In our book, we have included the 1968 Shelby de Mexico, Shelby GT350 Hertz, T5, Tournament of Thrills modified and used Mustangs, and the Tunnel Port 320.

Mustang Boss
The 1969 Mustang Boss 302 and 429 was first introduced in 1969 by the newly hired GM designer Larry Shinoda. The Boss came in two forms for the fastback body line: the Boss 302 used a 4 barrel version of the 302 cubic inch, V8 to increase the horsepower by 80 to 290hp; and the Boss 429 had the largest Mustang engine of 1969, a 429 cubic inch, 4 barrel, ram air, V8 with 375 horsepower. The Boss came with special "Hotchkiss" type rear suspension and many other performance options and body options to handle the larger power and seven inch Magnum 500 rims. The first 50 Boss Mustangs were hand built.

Russ Davis Performance Special
The 1969 Russ Davis Performance Special Mustangs were a group of special order, brightly painted Mach 1 Mustangs. We think these Mustangs were used as a series of race car promotions since many drivers worked as salesmen for Russ Davis Ford of Covina California, including Gas Ronda. Some of the special order colors were the same as the 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotion, but we do not think it is part of the same promotion due to the different colors, higher performance options, and not finding newspaper advertisements past June of 1968. In any case, we believe these bright, special order paint, 1969, high performance, Mach 1 Mustangs ordered by Russ Davis deserve its own special model entry.
