Body Styles (compare years, go back to 1987 summary information)
The 1987 Mustang was available in three standard body styles: a 2-door coupe, 3-door hatchback, and a convertible. The GT optioned hatchback continued to be available, but the SVO was no longer offered. In 1987, engine offerings were reduced to two: a new 225hp, high output, 5.0-liter V8; and the 90hp, 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder. The body was redesigned by removing the solid louvered panels behind the rear side quarter windows on the coupe and hatchback; placing a molded rear wing on the GT hatchbacks; and adding flush-mounted, body-molded headlights. Much of the front-end redesign came from the removal of governmental regulations on the use of discrete, self-contained, standard headlamps from 1940 to 1983. The grille was also modified by making the GT's grille solid and the base LX's grille open with the Ford logo suspended on a horizontal integrated, color-matched bar. Ford did not expect these changes to increase interest and was short parts for an estimated 10,000 cars by year's end. In 1987, ASC McLaren began offering custom convertibles made from two-door coupes.

Mustang GT
The 1987 Mustang GT design benefited from the new flush mounted headlamps, front fascia, a return of bodyside skirts, and smooth rear quarter windows which extend over the previous year's fixed louvers. Only two engines were available for the 1987 Mustang: a 90hp 2.3L inline-4-cylinder for the standard Mustang LX, and a 225hp 5.0L V8 for the Mustang GT. Popular 1987 options include t-tops and the new turbine wheels. The Mustang GT finally received it's own model number in 1987. The GT model can now be easily identified in the Vehicle Identification Number by a P42 for the hatchback or a P45 for the convertible.
Saleen Mustang
The 1987 Saleen Mustang was converted from the newly redesigned Ford Mustang base level LX hatchbacks and convertible. The new Saleen exterior features were the rear decklid spoiler and front valance. Performance changes included four wheel disc brakes, five lug SVO rotors, heavy duty master cylinder, 8-inch wide rear tires, and an optional 3.55 rear for quick acceleration. See our 1987 Saleen Data Explorer for more information.
ACS McLaren
New to 1987 is the ACS McLaren convertible. Between 1987 and 1990 ASC McLaren took Mustang coupes and converted them into two-seat convertibles. They were created by Peter Muscat and Ford, built by American Sunroof Company (ASC) with performance suspension and wheel parts from McLaren. Other customized items include body panels, custom paint, hood vents, aftermarket wheels, and black ostrich leather seats. 497 were built in 1987. In 1980 McLaren built a series of M81 Mustangs with Ford Racing.
