Check out this vintage photo taken in September 1964! That's Mike Mooney standing next to his new Caspian Blue 1965 Mustang hardtop. It had the big 289ci 271hp HiPo V8 engine and a manual transmission. This was taken outside the Patuxent River Naval Base while he was visiting his brother. Those look like dual redline tires! Look at the old cars in the background; not sure about the first one, second is a VW bug, third is a 65 LeMans or GTO.

- The rear view mirror was an option from FoMoCo so, rather than drill a hole in the body, I installed a high mount mirror so that my arm resting on the door top wouldn't obscure my rear view. This car was customized later I removed the stock tail lights and the exterior gas cap, installed four (two on each side) '64 Dodge square tail lights and moved the gas cap inside the trunk. I eventually got my hands on a Holman-Moody 327 cid (289 stroker) engine that was one of 256 that were built for the GT-40 program I have the build sheets from Ford. It ran a 12.9 sec. 111 mph quarter at Westhampton (LI, NY) drag strip with an open rear. The rear was the original 9' equipped with a Hone-O-Drive 2-speed rear with 4.56 gears. Lots more to this story and will be covered in part with my next book, 'Griffith, the man, the car,the legacy', a follow-up to my current book 'The Griffith Years, history of the Griffith Motorcar, 1964-76 and beyond'.
