(from page 2 of the 1969 Collection) Peter Manson's restored Poppy Green, 1969, Russ Davis Special / Rainbow of Colors, Super Cobra Jet, Mach 1 fastback was our Attitude of the Week for March 8th, 2008. This amazing Mach 1 was one of 10 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina California to promote his dealership and most likely his racing cars. We actually have its sister on our site. Peter has done extensive research as well as restoration on his car. The Rainbow of Colors was a west coast primarily 1968 sales promotion which offered new Mustang owners many sporty upgrades as well as one of 13 or 14 special order bright colors. Many of these cars were base models. New information on Russ Davis shows that this special order may have been for a racing promotion since the several race car drivers were salesmen including Gas Ronda with his famous brightly colored Cobra Jet racer.

(from page 2 of the 1969 Collection) Here is a close-up of the correct wheels for this car. This view also shows off the functional Cobra Jet shaker style hood scoop, hood pins, and grille mounted fog lamps. Peter is probably the second owner of this car, since he found it only a few miles away from the original dealer in California. Peter has also done extensive research on his Poppy Green color WT7034 and the other colors offered in the Rainbow of Colors west coast promotion.

(from page 3 of the 1969 Collection) Here is an earlier look at Peter's Poppy Green Mach 1 fastback. The door data tag for this car reads: 63C fastback sportsroof body style with deluxe interior, blank followed by 5 special paint with blacked out hood, 3AA black clarion knit and vinyl Mach 1 hi-back bucket seats, 10F assembled on the 19th of June, 1969, 71 ordered in the Los Angeles area, 3313 under special order (this number specifically to Russ Davis consisting of 10 Mustangs), S 3.50:1 rear axle ratio, and U automatic transmission.

(from page 3 of the 1969 Collection) Here is a look during some if the car's initial breakdown. Just a little paint and its done... NOT! Peter has been doing it the right way.

(from page 16 of the 1969 Collection) Special Order Yellow 1969 Mustang Mach 1 fastback with a 360hp (at 5400rpm), 428 cubic inch, 4 barrel, Super Cobra Jet, V8 engine. This restored car is one of the 10 special paint cars ordered by Russ Davis Ford, Covina California for a special promotion. We are hunting through the newspapers of the time to determine what the promotion was. It could have been a 1969 carry-over of the "Rainbow of Colors" West Coast Promotion, or a "Gas Ronda" special promotion. The Rainbow of Colors promotion offered new Mustang owners one of up to 13 special "Rainbow of Colors." This car has been repainted Ford Special Paint WT6135, which a a little more orange than what we believe is the original Yellow in this group of 13 colors. But WT6135 is a period Ford special order paint! This combined with some newspaper articles of the time says that funny car racer Gas Ronda was heavily sponsored by Russ Davis in 1969 and Gas Ronda drove a modified bright "orangey reddish" Mustang Mach 1. It is possible that the 10 special colored 1969 Mach 1 Mustangs ordered by Russ Davis was for a Race Car or Gas Ronda promotion. In this case a brighter yellow car may have been necessary, making the current color possibly very close to the original. What did the other 9 Mach 1 Mustangs ordered by Russ Davis look like? well here is one.

(from page 25 of the 1969 Collection) (Note: more photos are coming, this car is more complete now) Check out this special order purple 1969 Mach 1 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina, California. Yes, this is a match to the original color! which is currently undergoing restoration and is our Attitude Of The Week starting July 27th 2022. Russ Davis Ford was known for its involvement in racing, including having several drivers as salesman like Gas Ronda. So it is not surprising that they ordered many bright specially painted Mach 1 Mustangs in 1969. Most of them were ordered in May and June of 1969 but this one was earlier with a build date of October 1968. We think Russ Davis wanted one of the first 1969 Mach 1 Mustangs in its showroom so they ordered this special one late in 1968. Thomas and his wife have owned this car for 8 years and it was many different colors. During its last restoration, Revolution Speed Shop of Auburn Washington found its original color on a piece of the front fascia. Only a few special order purple colors were available in 1968/69 from Ford and this is one of them. Peter of thecoralsnake.com helped verify this color was indeed available in 1968. Stay tuned for additional photos as the car becomes completed.

(from page 25 of the 1969 Collection) Russ Davis special ordered several 1969 Mach 1 Mustangs in bright colors probably to promote the race cars and drivers like Gas Ronda who also worked as a salesman. We have several of these special 1969 Russ Davis performance special Mach 1 Mustangs on our site. This one has a door data tag DSO and special order number of 71 1323, where the others are 71 3200 and 71 3313 which are later.

(from page 25 of the 1969 Collection) The door data tag reads: 63C blank 5 3W 07K 711323 A 6. These codes mean: 63C fastback/sportsroof body style, blank paint code indicating a special order paint, 5 in the paint code section for the blacked out hood, 3W trim code for the white Clarion knit vinyl Mach 1 hi-back bucket seats, 07K scheduled build date of October 7th, 1969, 71 1323 ordered in the Los Angeles area with special order number 1323, A 3.5:1 rear axle, and 6 4-speed close ratio manual transmission.

(from page 25 of the 1969 Collection) A peek inside of the R-code, 428ci, Cobra Jet, Ram Air, 335hp, V8. Very cool!
