The first 252 Shelby GT-350s for 1966 had 1965 Mustang bodies and 1965 Mustang serial number plates under their Shelby serial number plates. These "carry-over" cars had mostly 1965 features including standard Koni shocks and their engines where painted black instead of blue.

The GT package was very popular in 1966 because the option sold for $152.20 and included the high-performance 271hp (at 6000rpm), 289 cubic inch, V8 engine; dual exhaust; fog lamps; special ornamentation; disc brakes; GT racing stripes and handling package components. This Mustang shows off its Red Band nylon tires which was a option for $48.89, and styled steel wheels for $93.84. (7 photos of a 1966 Orange And White Mustang Fastback) Check out this 1966 Mustang fastback owned by Tony and Tammy Seader from La Salle, Colorado. It's painted Sunset Orange (top) over Pearl White (bottom). Tony tells us more, "We purchased the car about six years ago from a local car lot here in our small town. The car had been for sale for some time and seemed to have made it's way through five owners in about one year. Apparently the car had issues with the charging system. We were looking for a mate for our 66 coupe so we decided to buy it and work through the problems. After some trial and error we discovered that it had the wrong wiring harness. Once we replaced it with the correct harness and new voltage regulator the issue was solved. When we took possession of the car it had horrible faded red paint with black interior. We drove it that way for three years replacing only the wheels and tires, shocks, spring, and coils. Once we decided we couldn't stand that faded out red paint anymore the restoration was on! We stripped the car in the garage then took it to get it sandblasted. Once we decided the paint colors and scheme we took it to the body shop where we decided on many modifications. These mods included shaving the drip rails, cowl, and rear vents. We added the front racing apron and deck lid. Both the front and rear windows are glued in and window trim is delete. The air cleaner is custom made from a GT350 hood scoop and bolts onto the carb to make a real shaker hood. Dual tip side exhaust was added and American Racing torque thrust II rims."

A transparent (candy) red paint is applied over a silver basecoat. Notice how far the hood opens. This one has a set of special hinges which allows the hood to open farther than with stock hinges. The engine is a 302ci V8. Dana adds, "We had looked for about six months for a car when I found this one online for sale in Nashville, Tennessee . It was being used for 1/4 mile track racing. I think that is what saved the car as it never saw the road or bad weather. It has all original sheet metal and floor pans. We spent two years restoring and updating all the mechanicals and paint. Now we just enjoy showing and driving it."

This car is owned by Jack and Pat Davis of Oregon and was our Attitude Of The Week for the week of May 9th, 2010. Most of this car is original including its amazing Springtime Yellow exterior paint. The few items replaced are seat covers, carpet, driver side door panel, trunk mat, and radiator.
(7 photos of a 1966 Sauterne Gold Mustang GT Fastback) Check out this Sauterne Gold 1966 Mustang GT fastback. The owner of CloudCasters owns it. It was our featured Attitude Of The Week for the week starting January 2nd, 2011. The owner comments, "It had been sitting for 4+ years on four flats with an unmolested deluxe interior and exterior. It had a 450 HP dual carbed 302 with a Tremec 6-speed and Total Control Products (TCP) for coil-overs. I got it home, changed all fluids, and added a set of Vari-Shock dual adjustable shocks. A new battery was needed, so a Gel cell red top was added. It was already relocated to the trunk. After a few cranks it fired right up. I ran it down to the muffler shop and purchased 2-1/4-inch pipe with Flow Masters. I drove vehicle for three years until a complete (down to frame) restoration was done. The tear down revealed a dead mice nest in headliner and others in the rear wheel wells. I thought there was an odd smell. The color is Sauterne and is as close as one can get, with modern paints, to the original with the Wimbledon White stripes. The wheels are original style and size. Two sets were purchased and used to make one set that is wider and offset. The semi-slick Toyo R888 are perfectly sized at 235/50/15 in the rear and 205/50/15 up front. All four corners have disk brakes, SSBC up front and the large stock ones that came on the 9-inch Lincoln Versi rear end. The differential is a built with 3.80 gears, connected using an aluminum drive shaft. The steering is done with Flaming River components and a sub-frame kit welded underneath. This car is solid, and has been done very very well."

Dale tells us more, "After having an awesome Emberglo coupe, I fell in love with the GT350H and just had to have one. A real one is out of my budget so the next best thing was a tribute. So this is the fruits of my labour - a fully restored 1966 GT350H replica with all the good bits. Looks and drives great. I am really thrilled with the end result. It truly is a wonderful car, which looked after should live on forever."

It was exported to Germany where Ford could not register the "Mustang" name for sale. Ford replaced the "Mustang" emblems with "T-5" emblems. You also had the choice of a miles-per-hour or kilometers-per hour speedometer. These cars also came with a stiffer shock tower brace for the German autobahn. This car sold at the 2006 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Arizona auction for $27,000.
