Saleen modified the 1996 Mustang X-code engine. It puts out 220hp (at 4400rpm), 4.6 liter (281ci). Like the Mustang it is a single overhead cam, V8 engine.

This is the lowest output Saleen engine for 1996. It's basically just the stock GT engine. It is a SOHC 4.6L V8 with 220hp.

The interior is black. Steve Saleen signed the dash on the passenger side. This one also has a carbon fiber manual shift handle.

Here is the window sticker for this Rio Red 1996 Mustang Saleen S-281 convertible. It cost $36,800 when new. The only option it has is the 3.55 rear gears. The last item on the standard feature list is a Saleen Owner's Jacket.

Tangerine 1996 Mustang Saleen Speedster owned by Ara Afarian from Rancho Cucamonga, California. It has a 4.6L V8 and an automatic transmission. Ara says that this is the only 1996 S-281 Tangerine automatic Speedster ever made by Saleen.
