This amazing 1968 white vinyl top Mustang owned by Mal Hillier of Melbourne, Australia, has all the codes and special order color to be a Spanish Gold 1968 Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotional Mustang and was our Attitude of the Week for April 26th, 2009. It was built in San Jose, ordered in Los Angeles, under a special order with special paint WT3822. Mal writes: My Mustang was imported in to Australia from Los Angeles as a running car and I purchased it from an importer. I knew little about Mustangs and the hobby grew from there. The body and Paint have been refurbished and the color has been professionally matched to the original color in the trunk. Body was rust free fortunately. The Mustang was in very good original condition when purchased and I drove it home, I have done most of the mechanicals and put it all together my self, I also have the original owners manual and is a matching numbers car. But most of all, I love driving it. Spanish Gold shares the same paint code as Black Hills Gold used in January 1968 for the Color of the Month Mustang promotion. The Color of the Month promotion offered a special ordered color and sport options for each of the first 4 months of 1968. Black Hills Gold was offered in January for the New Years; Passionate Pink in February for Valentines day; Emerald Green in March for Saint Patrick's Day, and Eastertime Coral for April. This is a Black Hills Gold, South Dakota, local special edition Mustang convertible with special order gold paint, sport wheels, louvered hood, and 302ci V8 under the hood. We are calling it a "Special Dakota Days" Gold Mustang special model since one of the original newspaper advertisements referred to the cars in this way. Only twenty-five of these special models were ordered (5 hardtops and 20 convertibles).

Another photo of a Special Dakota Days Gold Mustang convertible with special order paint, sport wheels, and louvered hood. The special order paint name of "Black Hills Gold" makes sense since this is a South Dakota territorial special edition Mustang.

The convertible roof color is white. The special order paint is much brighter than the standard Sunlit Gold offered in 1968.

This 1968 Mustang hardtop was originally ordered by Galloways Garage, Inc of Newburgh, New York as a Sprint B with automatic transmission, special Black Hills Gold paint (Gold Metallic WT3822), and blacked out louvered hood. The Sprint B came with a V8 engine, argent style wheels, and GT fog lamps. Two 1968 Mustang promotions come to mind: the Anniversary gold with black striped louvered hood Seattle area
Golden Nugget Special, and the Black Hills Gold January
Color of the Month rumored to be in the Denver area only. Both these special promotional cars were built in the San Jose plant (VIN 8R...) where this car was built in Metuchen, New Jersey (VIN 8T...); therefore, technically this car may be neither but it was ordered with the same paint as the January
Color of the Month Black Hills Gold. During the restoration of this car, the wheels have been changed to later Magnum 500 wheels.

In 1968 the Sprint A options package came with a 6-cylinder engine, GT stripes, pop-open gas cap, and full wheel covers. The Sprint "B" option came with a V8, argent styled steel wheels (this car has had them replaced with later Magnum 500 wheels), and GT fog lamps. Earlier year versions of the A and B package differed only by automatic or manual transmission.
