(from page 32 of the 1967 Collection) This page says, Bred first... to be first! How do you improve on a classic? How do you add excitement to an American original - an original which is already the most exciting, most acclaimed new car in history? With subtle body changes and interior improvements. The result is a rare combination that says Mustang for '67 is undeniably new - without taking away the flair and flavor of the classic design that is so unmistakably Mustang.
We've added fresh Mustang optional features, like a hefty 390-cubic-inch Thunderbird Special V-8 for extra spirit. Like the Tilt-Away Steering Wheel that moves aside when you open the door - and tilts up or down to nine different driving positions. Fingertip Speed Control which lets you set cruising speed without need to maintain constant accelerator pressure. SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic... go fully automatic or shift manually for the fun of it without a clutch. Greater traction Wide-Oval Sports Tires with V-8's. Front Power Disc Brakes. SelectAire Conditioner and Convenience Control Panel.
What did we keep? The standards that made Mustang a classic in the first place... standards that won the hearts of almost a million-and-a-half owners in under three years. Those owners (and many more) have taken the Mustang Pledge... because of standard features like bucket seats and full carpeting. Floor-mounted shift. All-vinyl trim. Lithe performance and handling. And most particularly we kept the classic long, lean, adventurous look - of Mustang, the original. Take the Mustang Pledge in one of three exciting ways... hardtop, convertible, fastback.

The photo captions says, Mustang Hardtop: World's best seller, Bucket seats, vinyl trim, carpeting are standout standard features.

(from page 40 of the 1967 Collection) This is a rare one. It's a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT-500 hardtop! It was the first and only one built by Shelby - called "Little Red". Although more 1967 hardtops where built by Shelby, it was the inspiration for the 1968 California Special. This GT-500 had twin Paxton Superchargers on a 428ci engine. It is reported to have been crushed as most prototypes were.
(from page 40 of the 1967 Collection) This 1967 Shelby GT-500 hardtop even has a black vinyl top. Vinyl tops where hugely popular in the 60s and 70s.

Only one built! It's a Candyapple Red 1967 Shelby GT-500 convertible. It's owned by Samantha and Brian Styles from Delray Beach, Florida. This is our featured Attitude Of The Week for the week starting February 1, 2015. It has a 428ci V8 "Interceptor" engine and an automatic transmission. Shelby had intended to offer the GT350 and GT500 in all three body styles - six in all. Brian adds, "We just gained access to the Ford Special Orders (DSOs) and they confirm that Shelby American even went so far as to create "package" codes for each type of car. The convertible was package code "413C", meaning a GT500, Auto, AC, Smog, Convertible Body. Carroll claimed the convertible as his own personal car. About 4 months later, the car was needed for a new task. It was used to bolt on the A.O. Smith built '68 styled fiberglass designed by Ford. It was essentially disguised as a '68 for the purpose of taking photos -- a lot of photos. A couple Shelby employees referred to the car in the stage as a "68 styling proto," though there was actually nothing prototype about it. Nothing more than a model putting on a new dress for her walk down the runway." Check out the www.1967shelbyconvertible.com website for more information.

This was our featured Attitude Of The Week for March 2nd, 2008. Don has this extra information to share, "The car was found on the internet and purchased February 2004 from an exotic car dealer in the Seattle, Washington area. The photos I received with car indicated that the body work and paint were done in September 1997 and is still in very good shape. The engine bay and engine along with interior and floor pans were in pretty sad shape. The mileage at time of purchase was 54,243. Once the engine and tranny was pulled, the undercarriage was inspected completely. We found several modifications that led me to believe car had been extensively drag raced at one time. The right rear shock housing was pushed up and split in three areas. The trans linkage, clutch bracket and shifter had been modified. Since my purchase, the following work has been completed: interior gutted and replaced, dash repainted correct color and all dash pieces replaced, factory console replaced with a humphugger console, factory shifter replaced with a Hurst shifter, electrical gauges replaced with mechanical gauges, 390 engine replaced with a 428 Cobra Jet engine, grille replaced with correct GT/CS grille and Marchal fog lights, front and rear bumpers replaced, engine bay detailed, rearend rebuilt with new axles and 325:1 Posi w/traction bars, GT pop-open gas cap added, standard LED sequential tail lights from Mustang Project, and the driver's side floor pan and passenger side floor pans replaced along with left front torque box."
4.6 of 5 mustang attitude4.6 of 5 mustang attitude4.6 of 5 mustang attitude4.6 of 5 mustang attitude4.6 of 5 mustang attitude (from page 1 of the 1968 Collection) Royal Maroon 1968 Mustang GT California Special hardtop, left rear view. Check out the California Special emblem on the rear fender. Don added LED sequential tail lights from Mustang Project. The tail lights come on in three steps as the turn signals are activated. First the outside two, then the middle two, then the inside two. This is similar to the mid 60s Thunderbirds, except these use LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs.
(from page 1 of the 1968 Collection) Don's Royal Maroon 1968 GT California Special was the inspiration for the development of the 1968 GT/CS diecast produced by Greenlight Toys and was the original car used in their research for their 1/18th scale model.

The front nose and hood are from a Shelby.
