Which was one day before the official first day of sale for the new Mustang on March 17th. So, where is the second Mustang sold? Good luck finding it, as 22,000 Mustangs were sold on March 17th! This Mustang was delivered with the following options: Wimbledon White paint, 260ci 2V V8 engine, Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, Rally Pac gauges, power brakes, power steering, power convertible top, padded visors, reverse lights, a heavy duty battery, full-length console, tinted windshield, a push-button AM radio with antenna, rocker panel moldings, Deluxe wheel covers with spinners, white wall tires, heater delete, seat belt delete, dual outside mirrors, compass, day/night mirror, and 2-speed electric wipers and washer.|

It's all original except the brakes were upgraded to discs.
(7 photos of a 1964 Pace Car White Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car Hardtop) This is a 1964 Mustang Indianapolis Pace Car hardtop. This is one of about 185 replicas that were sold in 1964 to the public. Not just any dealer could sell them though. They had to compete for them! The competition, called "Checkered Flag" and "Green Flag" contests, were based on the dealer's sales performance prior to the introduction of the Mustang in April of 1964. The top five dealerships in each district received a Pace Car replica. This car was won by Bennett Ford in Salt Lake City, Utah. The pace cars are all sequentially numbered (VIN) between 111500-126000. They have the same dataplate codes; 65A=hardtop, C=Pace Car White paint, 42=white & blue interior. Many were sold to customers with the stripes and lettering removed. Thirty-seven Wimbledon White 1964 Mustang Pace Car convertibles were created for the actual Indianapolis 500 race. Three of them were modified to be actual pace cars (4-speed transmission, tuned 289ci engines, lowered suspension, and speed rated tires). Another thirty-five convertibles with red, white, or blue interiors were used as Dignitary Cars. They were auctioned to dealerships and sold to the public after the race event.

Mike adds, "I bought the car from the second owner in 1998 who had the car since 1967. It was originally bought in Big Spring, Texas from Bob Shasta Ford. I restored the car from 1998 to 2004 and its first trip was to Nashville Tennessee for the 40th Anniversary of the Mustang. It is equipped with: Power Steering, Air Conditioning, Rally Pac, Full Length
Console, Back up Lamps, 260 V8, Cruise-O-Matic, Knock Off wheel covers, and 14 inch wheels. Fixing to add the dealer installed dual exhaust and Cobra dress up kit that was available in 1964." The data plate has a Body 65A for the 2-door coupe, Color M for Wimbledon White paint, Trim 85 for Red Vinyl seats, Date of 29E for the build date of May 29 1964, DSO 61 for Dallas Texas, Axle 1 for the 3.00 Axle Ratio, Trans 6 for Cruise-O-Matic.

He just completed an 8 year restoration.

It's a Ford built replica of the one that actually paced the race. This is one of about 40 convertibles and about 190 hardtops built by Ford back in 1964. The convertibles were used as Dignitary (parade) cars at the race, then auctioned off to the dealerships. The hardtops were given straight to dealers. Of all the convertibles, only very few remain. This car has its original 210hp (at 4400rpm), 289 cubic inch, 4 barrel, V8 engine.

The assembly line wasn't fully rolling out Mustangs until a month later. This one was on display at the Ford world headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. It has a red interior and black convertible top. I've read that this Mustang was fitted with rumble seat from Ford. It has long since been removed.

There was two others built especially for pacing the race (VIN 5F08F100240 and 5F08F100242). The others have yet to be found. These three Mustangs were modified by Holman-Moody with modified 289ci V-8 engines (originally they had stock 260s), lowered/stiffened suspension, grab bars (back seat side panels), two-way radios, and flag mounts. This one was listed on eBay with a reserve of $1,099,000.00

They were built with red, white, or blue interiors. They were auctioned to dealerships and sold to the public after the race event. They were also known as festival cars, probably because they circled the track at the 500 Festival Open Invitation - a PGA Tour event in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1964. A couple are known to still exist today.
