1965 In 1965 Shelby American modified a lot of Wimbledon White fastbacks directly from the San Jose factory with the 271hp(289ci, V8) engine. The converted cars were named the Shelby GT-350 because there was 350 feet between Shelby's main assembly line and the engine room. Engine modifications boost its performance up to 306hp with a Cobra aluminum high rise intake manifold, 715cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor, Cobra cast aluminum finned valve covers and 6.5 quart oil pan, steel tubing "Try-Y" exhaust headers, low restriction mufflers, and dual side-exit exhaust pipes. Body modifications included a fiberglass hood with NASCAR-style pins and functional scoop, a cleaned up grill with a mustang logo which will become the 1969 Mustang standard, and all were Wimbledon White with blue 10 inch wide racing "LeMans" stripes. Interior modification included a high performance instrumented dash, a collection of different wooden steering wheels, removing the back seats and placing the spare tire there to classify it as a SCCA racing series sports car, and many others. Shelby VIN plates were affixed directly over the Ford VIN numbers. 562 units were built in 1965 which included 521 street versions($4547), 34 race-prepared models($5995), 4 drag racing versions, and 3 prototypes.

1966 In 1966 Shelby added Raven Black, Sapphire Blue, Ivy Green, and Candy Apple Red to the 1965 Wimbledon White only color selections for the GT-350. 1000 special gold striped Raven Black fastbacks were sold to Hertz for part of a Hertz promotional program. These special black and gold Shelbys became known as the Shelby GT-350H special model.

1967 The 1967 Mustang Shelby came in two models: the Shelby GT350 with a 306hp, 289 cubic inch, V8; and the newly introduced Shelby GT500 with a 350hp, 425 cubic inch, big-block, V8. Both the GT-350 and GT-500 came only as fastbacks, although there was one prototype GT-500 convertible and another prototype GT-500 hardtop.
Shelby
1968 The 1968 Shelby came in three models: the GT-350 had the 306hp 302ci V8 engine, the GT-500 had the 335hp 428ci V8 engine, and the GT-500KR King of the Road had the 400hp 428ci Cobra Jet V8 engine. The 1968 Shelby featured twin hood scoops at the leading edge of the car, hood pins, fiberglass front valance, and the first American twin rectangular driving lights.

1969 The 1969 Shelby came in two models: the GT-350 which got Ford's new 290hp, 351 cubic inch V8 and the GT-500 got the 1968 GT-500 335hp, 428 cubic inch, Cobra Jet V8. Both models had fiberglass fenders, hood and rear cap which made the Shelby 3 inches longer than the 1969 Mustangs. Other changes included five recessed NASA-type hood scoops, a chrome strip at the hood's leading edge which wrapped around the grille to meet the thin Shelby chrome bumper, Lucas driving lights, side-centered Shelby GT side stripes, larger break body side air scoops, sequential rear taillights, and a spring mounted license plate which hid the fuel cap.
Shelby
1970 The 1970 Shelby came in two models: the Shelby GT-350 and the Shelby GT-500, in both fastback and convertible body styles. 1970 Shelbys were carry overs from 1969; and therefore the bodystyle and options did not change. One difference was the hood stripes. In 1970 the Shelbys had two black front pointed hood stripes centered over the outer four hood vents. This was the last year the Shelby was offered. It doesn't appear again until the 2006 model year.
