(from page 45 of the 1968 Collection) This GT/CS Mustang article was in the March 15th, 1968, edition of The Times of, San Mateo, California. It says BORN IN CALIFORNIA - A new California Special Mustang, to be designated the GT/CS, will make its public debut in Ford dealerships Friday, March 1. The new Mustang, design especially for California will be sold only in the California sales districts. The Ford assembly plant at San Jose will build the car. Features that will identify the Mustang GT/CS include horizontal taillights, a racing spoiler, rectangular fog lamps, a black-out front grille without ornamentation, competition-type hood latches, a fiberglass deck lid, and side scoops with bold stripe letters GT/CS.

(from page 45 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a Ford advertisement we just found searching through newspapers for the 1968 Mustang GT California Special. We've found many so far and was the first on the web to show them to you. We've clipped down the ad here so you can see the people in the background better and the wording. It says, It looks like a Shelby GT. It's priced like a Mustang. It's built just for Californians. It's the NEW MUSTANG GT/CS Inspired by the Shelby GT, this special Mustang has a spoiler and horizontal taillights. Rectangular fog lamps shine from a wild blackout grille. Wicked-looking scoops and special GT/CS stripes on the sides. Four hot powerplants to choose from. All this and a long, long list of options that let you practically design your own car! This ad was placed in the April 4th, 1968, edition of the Daily Review of Hayward, California, by Hayward Motors. But we also found the same Ford ad placed by Under Wood Ford of Ukiah California, and general ads in San Mateo and Oakland on the same day.

(from page 45 of the 1968 Collection) Check this one out! It's a Whipped Cream 1968 Rainbow Of Colors Mustang hardtop. Check out the paint - this is the first one we have on our site that wears it's original shade of Whipped Cream paint. It actually has light green tone to it. It also has it's original 302ci V8 and an automatic transmission. The owner tells us, "Came across this car in 2006. The second owner was selling it, having grown tired of it - saying it never has won or ever will win any prizes. I was able to met the daughter of the original owner and get some very important information on the car. Her mother bought the car off the showroom floor and loved it at first sight. The original owner kept the car in a carpeted, heated, and air conditioned garage while in California. When she moved to the mid-west she drove the car herself instead of having it hauled. When unable to drive anymore, she sold it to a neighbor, who sold it to us. The spare tire is one of the original tires that came with the car. I am happy to say the second owner was so very wrong about it not winning any prizes. It has won several times and considering it is up against cars that have been totally restored, I think is great."

(from page 45 of the 1968 Collection) Special order Passionate Pink (from the February 1968 Color of the Month promotion) and the 1968 and 1969 Rainbow of Colors promotion (Hot Pink) 1968 Mustang hardtop. This car was ordered in April of 1968 which puts the car between the two promotions, but the same color (Ford# WT9036) was used on both. Because all Rainbow of Color and Color of the Month promotional Mustangs were reported to have been built at the San Jose plant (R-code in the VIN), and this car was built at the Dearborn plant (F-code), we believe this car was dealer ordered for the late April Easter Collection of Colors promotion which featured many of the pastel colors available on 1968 Mustangs. Besides the special order paint: this car has the deluxe full disc wheel covers; metal rocker panel trim; and the base level 115hp (at 400rpm), 200 cubic inch, 1 barrel, inline 6 cylinder engine. This is a Sprint 200 A (6 cylinder sports options package) special order car which included the deluxe wheel covers, rocker panel trim, and louvered hood sport options at a reduced cost.

This car has been repainted but the original pink is underneath. The door data tag for this car reads 65A blank 2A 30D 322391 4 W where 65A is the hardtop body style, a blank color code indicating a special order color, 2A black interior trim, 30D assembled on the 30th of April indicating that it may be a dealer replacement for the Easter Collection of Colors Mustang promotion or a customer special order, 322391 32 is the Cleveland ordering area and 2391 is the special order request number, 4 2.38:1 rear axle ratio, and W automatic transmission.
