(from page 65 of the 1968 Collection) Ever hear about the Mississippi, Louisiana 1968 Dixie Special limited edition Mustang? Neither did we until we discovered this series of newspaper advertisements from several Mississippi and Louisiana dealerships between February 27th and March 29th of 1968. This ad was placed by Swartzfager Ford in the March 15th, 1968 edition of the Laurel Leader-Call in Laurel Mississippi. From this ad we see that the Dixie Special was a limited number of specially built Mustang, Fairlane hardtop, and Ford XL fastbacks for the Dixie area. From the other advertisements in this set we see that the Dixie Special included a special paint job, a Dixie Special license plate, and an emblem on every unit. It doesn't appear that just one color was used since this advertisement says Special Colors. From the last ad we know that at least one was a light yellow and most of the ads state a Mustang hardtop. We also think the Dixie Special emblem is the 11 star badge with the Dixie Special lettering shown at the bottom of each ad. Probably 11 stars for each of the states in the original Confederate Union. Now the hunt is on to find one of these Mustangs! Could this be one of them? The DSO, date, and special color matches. This ad shows some new 68 Ford cars on a car carrier. The two Mustangs on top look like GTs. They have the fog lights in the grille and C-stripes on their sides. It is interesting that they have the economy dog-dish style hub caps. Many of the 60s cars were ordered this way.

The Golden Nugget Mustangs came with the blackened hood louvers, black side C-stripes, and black interiors. They also came with a plaque on the dash with the owner's name. This one does not have the plaque.

Its a little beat up, missing its Lemans over-the-top stripes, front grille, and a backseat but otherwise its in amazing condition. I photographed this Shelby GT-350 at the 2011 Mustang Roundup car show held in Bellevue, Washington.

VIN numbers range from 8F02R135007 to 8F02R135056 and the first batch of 18 where scheduled for assembly on December 30, 1967 with delete export brace, 428ci Cobra jet, GT option, steel wheels, aluminum intake, Wimbledon white, and no racing stripes. Gas Ronda, Jerry Harvey, Hubert Platt, Don Nicholson, Hubert Platt, and Al Joniec raced them for Ford at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals held February 2-4. This is Don Nicholson's car. An additional 32 cars where built and at least 8 went to dealerships to promote the event.

This car was a special order car from the San Jose, California area. Besides the special order paint it came with automatic transmission, white sidewall tires, center console, power disk brakes, power steering, AM radio, tinted glass, deluxe seat belts, remote left hand mirror, and deluxe wheel covers which included the center red cap to the standard full wheel covers. The vinyl roof may have been a dealer added option. The Rainbow of Colors was an east coast promotion which featured special order paint in a rainbow of colors. I got to see this car in person. Its been repainted but its in very good condition. We also have a sister to this car since it shares the same special order number.

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) This car needs restoration but its a special order car. It has special order Eastertime Coral exterior paint as part of the April 1968 Color of the Month promotion. Other upgrades includes a 289ci V8 engine (removed, not on this car anymore), automatic transmission, power steering, AM radio, tinted glass, wheel covers; most of which is missing. This car was ordered with Orville and Ann's Mustang, since it has the same DSO and special order number. The door tag to this car reads 65A blank 2A 15D 513000 2 W; where the paint code is blank.

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) This is a copy of a Ford press release for the 1968 California Special hardtop. The text reads, Ionia, Michigan - Fiber glass components for Ford's recently announced California Special version of the popular Mustang -- designated the Mustang GT/CS -- are being produced by A.O. Smith Corporation's plant here at a rapid pace to keep up with West Coast demand for the sporty model. A fiberglass deck lid with integral racing spoiler lower back panel and body side scoops are among the new Mustang's design features that reflect the definite influence of Ford's 1968 Shelby GT models, built at Ionia by A.O. Smith.

It was originally the 1968 California Special hardtop prototype. Then it was sent to Shelby to become the 1968 GT-500 hardtop prototype. It is known as the "Green Hornet" and is still around today! The rocker stripes say EXP 500. As "Experimental".

(from page 67 of the 1968 Collection) This is the official results of the 1968 Mobil Economy Run held from April 2nd through April 4th from LA to Indianapolis. The race was to end in New York but was cancelled on April 5th due to civil unrest across the country because of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday April 4th. The Mustang came in 5th place in the Class "A" compact six class. This ad was placed in the April 9th edition of the Bakersfield Californian. This race inspired the 1969 Mustang E special edition. In December of 1968, it was announced by Richard F Tucker, vice president of marketing for Mobil in North America, the event will be cancelled in the United States citing "changing advertising patterns and changing emphasis in automotive performance as major factors influencing the decision."

(from page 1 of the 1969 Collection) Midnight Green 1969 GTO hardtop owned by Jeff Klein from Illinois. Jeff has owned the GTO since 1990. It's had an engine rebuild in 1989 and new paint in 1992. Joe's Mustang also has a 3-speed manual transmission.

The decals inside say 428. 428ci engines were put into Shelby GT-500s. Jorge says that it would make a nice GT-500 or GT-350.
