(from page 48 of the 1968 Collection) Here is a close-up of a Phil Long Ford advertisement for the 1968 Denver area High Country Special Mustang hardtop. It says that the High Country Special has special equipment exclusive in the Rocky Mountain west which includes racing hood latches, spoiler rear end, side air scoops, special racing stripe, and "High Country" special '68 emblem. We found this ad in the July 18th, 1968, edition of the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph newspaper in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This yellow was called Corporate Yellow when special ordered on the 1968 Mustang and later became Bright Yellow or Grabber Yellow in 1969 and 1970 as a standard Shelby Mustang color. This GT500-KR has its original interior and 54,000 miles. The car was repainted once in 1987. In 2002, the drive train, engine compartment, underbody and suspension were restored and detailed to SAAC Street Driven Concours class standards.

This one has the Sprint B package which had the V8 engine, Argent style wheels, and the fog lights. Gustavo tells us, "I found the Mustang in a small town called Woodacre while I was storm patrolling the area. Looking at the Mustang and not knowing what was the condition or what was the story of it, I asked the neighbor. The neighbor told me that people have been stopping for the Mustang and never was sold to anybody. Luckily that day I stopped by and the son's mother told me that her son was getting married and he was probably be interested in selling it. I called him up. I am the third owner. It was in very good condition. All matching numbers all original inside and outside."

The Sprint B came with a V8 engine, argent style wheels, and GT fog lamps. Two 1968 Mustang promotions come to mind: the Anniversary gold with black striped louvered hood Seattle area Golden Nugget Special, and the Black Hills Gold January Color of the Month rumored to be in the Denver area only. Both these special promotional cars were built in the San Jose plant (VIN 8R...) where this car was built in Metuchen, New Jersey (VIN 8T...); therefore, technically this car may be neither but it was ordered with the same paint as the January Color of the Month Black Hills Gold. During the restoration of this car, the wheels have been changed to later Magnum 500 wheels.

(from page 49 of the 1968 Collection) Royal Maroon 1968 Mustang hardtop owned by Jeff Driver from McKinleyville, California. Under the hood is it's original 289ci V8 engine. Jeff tells us, "I found it on Craigslist June 2011 as a fixer. All of the power train and suspension had been done but everything else needed repair or replacement. I did it all myself except for the paint."

It has many desirable options including the original J Code 302, full Sprint B package, console, tinted glass, cruise-o-matic and others shown in the Marti report. The exterior was restored to original, and the motor has had many upgrades including Edelbrock intake and carb, Mallory distributor, MSD 6 ignition box and coil, comp cams magnum cam and roller tip rockers, hooker comp headers, flowmasters, and 2.5 pipes with dual tips."

The Color of the Month Mustang promotion ran the first four months of 1968 featuring a New Years January special gold paint, pink for Valentine's Day, a March St. Patrick's Day green, and Eastertime Coral in April. All Color of the Month Mustangs where rumored to be built in San Jose (VIN starting with 8R) and ordered for the Denver area. This car was built in San Jose but ordered in Los Angeles under special order 0778. In 1968, the San Jose plant also built special order cars with this same pink paint (WT9036) for the 1968 Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotion. The Rainbow of Colors cars were mainly ordered in the Los Angeles area, so this may be one of those cars instead.

Why is the top up? It's Seattle weather.

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) "See the Man", Seattle Times newspaper Mustang ad for January 26th, 1968. The ad says, "Report to people who want to break away from the look-alike pack! Mustang! The one car on the road you can't mistake for any other. With a long, lean look all its own. With bucket seats, vinyl interior, wall-to-wall carpeting and floor-mounted stick shift - all standard. Mustang. It's really something else! See the man with better ideas.. your Ford Dealer."

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) This is an advertisement for the 1968 Carroll Shelby's GT350/GT500 Cobra from the Friday, January 12th, 1968 edition of the Seattle Times newspaper. The dealership is Metke Ford east, across Lake Washington from Seattle in Bellevue Washington. Data for three 1967 Shelby's are shown in this add as well as five 1968 Mustangs, and one 1967 Mustang. Notice the last line of this add, "Home of the Shelby GT 500 & 350 and the new model "C". 1968 marked the first year Ford introduced its number one selling car in England to America, the Model C Cortina.

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) Advertisement for the 1968 Seattle area Golden Nugget special Mustang we found in the January 26th, 1968 edition of the Seattle Times. We found several of these advertisements in the January and February issues of the Seattle Times newspaper to promote the 525 specially painted and optioned Mustangs. This advertisement says, "Exclusive for this area only! Specially ordered, specially painted Mustangs, each with a golden plaque for the dash panel bearing the customer's name. Sunlit gold color, with black vinyl top, black hood panels. Black stripe. Whitewalls. Wheel covers. Plus all the better ideas that make Mustang America's favorite, most imitated sports car. More Mustang than ever for '68." This ad also shows what the golden dash plate looks like (of course in black and white and in a different scale...) We think this advertisement was payed for by Ford since it has no local dealership listed, which may mean that the Golden Nugget Special promotion was a Ford promotion rather than a group of dealers. Another indication is the special order number of 1111 which appears on the door data tag of each car after the DSO code of 74 indicating the Seattle area. This 1111 code appears to be special since it was also used in 1966 for the 50 special limited edition Millionth Anniversary Mustangs.

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) Original advertisement showing a Medium Blue 1968 Shelby GT500 Mustang fastback. The ad says, Carroll Shelby's Cobra GT... for the person who wants everything in one car.

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) Only Mustang makes it happen! This is a 2 page Mustang magazine advertisement shows a Corporate Yellow hardtop with louvered hood and black stripes. The film strip across the top shows how owning a Mustang will change your life. Yep, this is definitely from the late 60's. The ad reads Turn yourself on, switch your style, and show a new face in the most exciting car on the American road! for '68, the great original comes in 3 versions - hardtop, fastback, convertible. With all the standards that make Mustang Mustang: bucket seats, floor-mounted stick, sports steering wheel, rich loop carpeting. And you can design your own luxury Mustang, sporty Mustang, practical Mustang... with better ideas like AM/FM Stereo Radio, air conditioning, SelectShift transmission, new 2-tone hood. Get hip to the great transformer: Mustang makes dull people interesting, interesting people absolutely fascinating! And only Mustang mades it happen! Check out an alternative version of this ad.

(from page 52 of the 1968 Collection) Only Mustang makes it happen! This Mustang magazine advertisement shows what happens to you after you buy a Candyapple Red 1968 Mustang GT fastback. The advertisement reads, Sidney spent Sundays seashelling at the seashore. Then Sidney started digging the '68 Mustang - the great original. Dug the models: hardtop, fastback and convertible. Liked the low price, too, which left Sidney lots of clams to design his own Mustang, Sidney style. Now Sidney's making waves all over. Last week he saved 3 bathing beauties. (And they all could swim better than Sidney!). Check out another version of this ad.
