It is also our Attitude Of The Week for the week starting June 17th, 2012. Orville tell us that he bought the 1968 Mustang off the showroom in Colorado which came with the Sprint package, 302ci V8 engine, and this amazing special paint. Since then Orville has seen other coral 1968 Mustangs in the area. "Samoan Coral" is the name of the paint as Orville recalls, and was part of the Color of the Month promotion in Colorado. The door data tag has a blank color code indicating that it the exterior color was a special order, the order district is 51 for Denver, the special order number is 3000, and the build date is 15D for April 15th. The car has been repainted but it is very close to the original color.

This was one of the 525 Gold Nugget Special cars ordered in the Seattle and Oregon areas. Most of the cars came in Sunlit Gold (color code Y) which some call Anniversary Gold (and think its a darker gold but we have no idea other than the ad from 1968 which says its Sunlit Gold), although all the standard and special 1968 colors were available. As part of the Gold Nugget Special package came a black vinyl roof, blacked out hood stripes (delete when restored) with louvers, and a golden dash plate with the owners name.

(from page 23 of the 1968 Collection) We received this email of a second special orange/red Mustang with DSO 710777. This one is under restoration along with a possible other special order Mustang. The owner writes, I have recently bought a 1968 Mustang and discovered the original color was a unique orange. After searching the VIN I discovered your site. I have DSO 710777. If you look closely at the picture you can see the original color of Madagascar Orange where the drip rails where removed. Also the trunk have never been touched and is the original Madagascar Orange. I am excited to re-store her one day and preserve Mustang history. Yet another twist of fate! I also owned a 66 Mustang for over 10 years and finally began to sand her layers of paint. Well as I began to remove door panels, and look in places I found a Bubble Gum color pink. Long story short, we believe this Mustang to have been originally painted Playmate pink which was only a special order in 66 and not officially offered. So I am honored to have 2 rare painted Mustang and hope to be able to save up to restore them to their original glory!

(from page 23 of the 1968 Collection) White 1968 Mustang hardtop owned by Lacy Austin from Kinston, North Carolina. Lacy tells us, "She was a weekend racer in Winston Salem, NC before the late owner became sick. He let me have the car for next to nothing. His best trophy was 'The Eliminator 2005 Super Street Class'. He said, 'Just have fun with it'. I named her Bad Co. and spent the last two years modding and making it street legal. Too many mods to list. If ever a car had 'ATTITUDE' this would be it."

Other options include wheel covers, fog lamps, metal rocker panels, gray side C stripes, power steering, power convertible top, and hood mounted signals.

The special promotional Mustangs featured special gold paint, louvered hood, sport wheel covers, and a special Golden Mustang Limited Edition badge. Russell ordered a Marti report which confirmed that his car is a Golden Mustang and it was ordered by Bemis Motor in Oregon, IL and sold in April of 1968. Stay tuned for more information.

We are still working to determine if a special darker version of Sunlit Gold called Anniversary Gold was used, but the ad from 1968 says Sunlit Gold. Other standard options in the Gold Nugget special package was a 4 speed manual transmission, power steering, AM radio, center console, deluxe seat belts, black vinyl roof, performance tires, wheel covers, louvered hood, and front fascia integrated turn signals.

(from page 26 of the 1968 Collection) Erik from British Columbia is trying to find out more about this Special Order purple painted 1968 Mustang hardtop (and possibly also a Cougar) that was built early 1968 and ordered in BC, Canada (DSO B7, blank paint code). The paint appears to be Ford WT9083 special order purple paint which was used in the Rainbow of Colors - West Coast promotion but we have found no evidence of this promotion further north than the Salt Lake City area. The paint is over a metallic blue but the purple paint is painted everywhere as usually done by the factory when the trim is all off (we've seen other factory special painted Mustangs with a different color underneath). Erik, who owns this car, has a friend in BC who owns a Cougar with the same paint. Contact us or Erik if you know of others or have any ideas.

Since 1966, the Sprint options package's main purpose was to offer an engine upgrade to the next largest engine over the popular base model to prevent a shortage. For 1968 this engine was the 195hp (at 4600rpm), 289 cubic inch, 2 barrel V8. Economically priced the Sprint Package from the factory which includes the Argent styled steel wheels, fog lights, and wheel lip moldings.

It has its original 200ci engine and an automatic transmission. Tim says, "I bought it September of 2011. Did a complete restoration and finished September 2012. Kept the original exterior color. Changed interior from black to aqua and white. Also added wood trim, deluxe TMI sports seats with heat, blue LED gauge lights, rear LED sequential lights, and front disk brakes."

The Sprint option was was an economically priced upgrade which was aimed at reducing the risk of running out of the base engine by offering an engine upgrade and many of the GT options. This car has the 6-cylinder engine and is therefore known as the 1968 Sprint "A" Package. The door tag on this car reads 65CI6A05D712W: 65C 2-door hardtop, I Lime Gold metallic exterior paint, 6A black bucket seats, 05D assembled on the 5th of April, 71 ordered in the Los Angeles area, 2 2.79:1 rear axle ratio, and 2 automatic C4 transmission.

Dave tells us about his progress so far, "I bought a disassembled shell last April and spent most of the summer removing and repairing rust. I am now working in my heated basement and have rebuilt the suspension and brakes. Last weekend we installed the engine. I expect the rest of the drivetrain to go in this week. January and February will be final body detail, then March is paint - white with blue stripes. Hope to be driving it this summer."
