The engine is a tweaked Mustang K-code 289ci 4-barrel V8. This Shelby version put out 306 horsepower over the 271 horsepower Mustang version. Shelby engine modifications included: 715 cfm Holley carburetor, Cobra aluminum high-rise intake manifold, Cobra finned aluminum valve covers with matching oil pan, Tri-Y exhaust headers, and low-restriction mufflers. Here is that 289ci 4bbl High Performance engine. This was the top of the line engine. It was rated at 271 horsepower and had a compression ratio of 10.5:1.

From the factory this 1965, Ford, Mustang, K-code, 289 cubic inch, 4 barrel, V8 engine had 271 horsepower at 6000rpm. This engine has been bored .30 over with forged pistons, crane cam, solid lifters, roller rockers, original heads with stainless valves, a rebuilt top loader with Hayes performance clutch, and a 389 Posi rear.
