Smith Corporation's plant here at a rapid pace to keep up with West Coast demand for the sporty model. A fiberglass deck lid with integral racing spoiler lower back panel and body side scoops are among the new Mustang's design features that reflect the definite influence of Ford's 1968 Shelby GT models, built at Ionia by A.O. Smith.

(1 photo of a 1968 Green Mustang Shelby GT-500 Hardtop) This is a dual prototype! It was originally the 1968 California Special hardtop prototype. Then it was sent to Shelby to become the 1968 GT-500 hardtop prototype. It is known as the "Green Hornet" and is still around today! The rocker stripes say EXP 500. As "Experimental".

Only one engine was more powerful in 1969 and that was the 375hp (at 5200rpm), 429 cubic inch V8 engine for the Boss option. 1969 was the first and only early year the Mustang came with four headlights.

(7 photos of a 1969 Poppy Green Mach 1 Russ Davis Performance Special / Rainbow Of Colors Mustang Fastback) Peter Manson's restored Poppy Green, 1969, Russ Davis Special / Rainbow of Colors, Super Cobra Jet, Mach 1 fastback was our Attitude of the Week for March 8th, 2008. This amazing Mach 1 was one of 10 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina California to promote his dealership and most likely his racing cars. We actually have its sister on our site. Peter has done extensive research as well as restoration on his car. The Rainbow of Colors was a west coast primarily 1968 sales promotion which offered new Mustang owners many sporty upgrades as well as one of 13 or 14 special order bright colors. Many of these cars were base models. New information on Russ Davis shows that this special order may have been for a racing promotion since the several race car drivers were salesmen including Gas Ronda with his famous brightly colored Cobra Jet racer.

(6 photos of a 1969 Blue Mach 1 Mustang Fastback) This 1969 Mach 1 Mustang fastback was driven by drag racer, Jim McCormick. John says, "It pretty much looks the same today. I purchased the car from her grandson who received the car via her will." Here is the kicker... It was built at the San Jose plant under Los Angeles Ordering District under special order #0084 and the car has a special order paint WT6210. (1 photos of a 1969 Pastel Gray Mach 1 Mustang Fastback) This amazing Pastel Gray 1969 Mustang Mach 1 fastback was part of Emmanuel Theux's collection in 2008 and is now in the north west of France. This Mach 1 has the H-code, 250hp, 351ci, V8 engine and is our Attitude Of The Week for May 10th, 2009. Emmanuel says that this car was sold new to a US Marine who had to return it to the dealer after having troubles with the payment. It was then sold to a Swiss man in 1970, who was living in the states. Emmanuel says he bought it and brought it to Switzerland then sold it in Geneva after owning it for a year in 2008. It is a very complete car, matching numbers with the original body buck tag in the engine compartment. Pastel Gray is so light that it is almost white; and this car looks great with its red Mach1 side stripe and black hood, front air dam, rear window louvers or sport slats, and rear spoiler.
