Robbie Tromp from the Netherlands has restored this Olive Green 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang which is also a Branded Special. This olive green is one of 13 special colors which a new Mustang owner could order along with several upgrades in the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion. Also during this time dealers could add a Branded Special emblem to further promote a car. Amazingly this car is both! This was the first Olive Green Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang that found us. A few months ago, Wolfgang Kohrn of ponysite.de, contacted us about finding a unique originally painted, olive green, 1968, Mustang in the Netherlands which had all the options and special order data to indicate that it was the first car found of this unique color. This is that car which is also featured on Wolfgang's site. So far we've only found 9 names of the 13 colors of the promotion. This green was not one of them, so we've been temporarily calling it Olive Green. If you know the official color name, let us know. About the same time, Jeff from Oregon, emailed us on his newest purchase of an olive green 1968 Mustang which turns out to be a sister car to Robbie's because the share the same DSO order area, special order number, and therefore ordered by the same dealer which was, Lou Gerard Motors, in Redding, California. Look at the other photos of this car, Robbie has much more information.

Robbie writes, The Mustang was found in San Jose, California, where it had been underneath a cloth for a long time, in a driveway, in a suburb area. It had no license plate, so details are minimal. It had torn white vinyl, chrome moldings and golden striping, and some holes on both C-sides where the 'Branded' emblems had been. These were the only original missing things. For the rest: it was totally original, even the safety directions on the steering wheel and in the trunk where there. It was bought and shipped to the Netherlands early 2005. I bought the Mustang late 2005 and that was the start of the process. The Mustang was restored and left in the original state, I had replica emblems made (from some pictures), but now I have an original one, so I will be able to finish up the Mustang with 'original replicas'. I used the Mustang for my wedding in 2006, special cars must be used for special occasions. Until that time, because of the timeline of production (February '68) and sale in August '68, we thought the Mustang was a St. Patrick's Day special... boy o boy, we where wrong... Wolfgang was the one who started digging in the right direction and everything fits, watertight proof, it couldn't be better. A Rainbow Mustang and a Branded Special, all in one... Who could ask for more?

Its possible that the vinyl roof and Branded special pony emblem was added by the dealer.
(from page 14 of the 1968 Collection) This is an amazing close-up shot of Robbie's, Olive Green, 1968, Branded, Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang. Incredible restoration and photo Robbie!!! This will be my desktop wallpaper for quite some time.
(from page 14 of the 1968 Collection) Here Robbie is holding his newly discovered original design replica of the Branded Special vinyl roof emblem. The lower one was his best guess at the time of restoration which included a new vinyl roof, since the emblems were missing but the three bolt holes indicated its original location.
(from page 14 of the 1968 Collection) Nicely restored Nugget Gold vinyl interior which includes many upgrades including a full center console, automatic transmission, deluxe steering wheel, color matched deluxe seat belts, air conditioning, AM radio, and electric clock. See the next photo for a better shot of the electric clock.

(from page 14 of the 1968 Collection) This is a photo of the door data tag before restoration. The door data tag reads: 65A hardtop body style with standard bucket seats, blank color code indicating a special order color, 2Y nugget gold vinyl bucket seats, 16B scheduled for assembly on the 16th of February, 1968, 72 ordered in the San Jose area, 1194 special order number which is shared with Jeff from Oregon, 5 3.00:1 rear axle ratio, and W C4 automatic transmission. This data tag along with the color gives us the best match to the Rainbow of Colors west coast promotion. All cars for this promotion were built in the San Jose plant in 1968 or 1969 which the 8R in the VIN indicates. Also all the cars we've found were either ordered in the San Jose area (DSO 72) or Los Angeles (DSO 71), had blank color codes indicating a special order color, and have a special order number. Many of the options of this car also match the other Rainbow of Colors Mustangs we've compiled.
