The first Black Mustang was introduced the first year of Mustang production in 1964.
Black is black so not surprisingly there was only one shade of black introduced in 1964; Raven Black, and continued to be named Raven Black until 1975 when it became just Black. In 1969 a green shade of black was introduced named Black Jade.
There were 48 offerings of Black in 44 of the 47 production years of the Mustang. What years did not have a Black Mustang? 1972, 1973 and 1974. Remember these were the years of avocado green and harvest gold appliances. Follow this link to see photos of all Black Mustangs on this site.
There were a few black featured Mustang special models.  Raven Black 1966 Shelby GT350H The 1966 Shelby GT-350H only came in Raven Black. The "H" stands for Hertz. These cars were sold to the Hertz Rental Car Corporation and were available to the public for renting! Some early ones came with 4-speed manual transmissions. Since so many came back from rental customers with burnt out clutches, the later ones were all built as automatics.  Black 2003 100th Anniversary Mustang The 2003 100th Anniversary Centennial Edition of the Mustang only came in Black just like all the Fords did 100 years earlier. The 100th Anniversary Centennial Edition Mustang came with Premium Verona-grain Imola leather seating surfaces in two-tone parchment and 100th Anniversary deck lid and side badges. In addition, the owner received a commemorative key chain and watch, and a copy of the book, "The Ford Century." The Mustang Centennial coupe and convertible were optioned with 17-inch premium alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes and traction control, dual exhaust, power driver's seat with power lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Mach 460 AM/FM Stereo with six-disc CD changer. Production was limited to 3000 Mustang units.  Black 2003 10th Anniversary SVT Cobra Mustang Coming only in Black, Torch Red, and Silver; the 2003 Limited Edition 2003 10th Anniversary SVT Cobra received special carbon fiber patterned leather on the top of the steering wheel, carbon fiber leather on the shifter and hand brake, red window switch bezels, red seats inserts, red painted brake calipers all the way around, and big 17x9 inch 10th Anniversary wheels.  Black 2008 & 2009 Bullitt Coupe In 2008 and 2009 the Mustang Bullitt coupe came in Black and Highland Green. The new Mustang Bullitt brought back the style of the 1968 Mustang fastback used in the 1968 Steve McQueen movie Bullitt. This special model includes modified 18-inch micro machined Euro-flange Bullitt wheels with a satin finish; tri-bar pony wheel caps; dark gray painted calipers; satin finish Bullitt emblems/badging; 3.5 inch stainless steel packed exhaust tips; ram air and other improvements added to the 4.6 liter, 3-valve, single-overhead cam, V8 engine; and special handling. Below is a list of all years and shades of black Mustangs.
